After working with Cameron on several successful alteration projects, the opportunity arose for us to work together on a new build in Wellington. Tremendous architecture is the result which matches the brief perfectly, While the site is difficult the archectural framing of both hillside and harbour views is ideal. Furthermore, the arresting arrangement of materials and textures is admired by neighbours and passers by alike (as well as ourselves) and belies the reasonable construction cost. “Nik, Harley and the team did a superb job, totally living up to their Permitshop name on a major overhaul and extension of our 104 year old arts and crafts home. Even more noteworthy is that they had to put up with me an architect living offshore, demanding the impossible from afar and with no current knowledge of the current NZ planning regs or building code. Their calm, talent and professional approach is so reassuring and the work was done on time and they always delivered even with constant difficult neighbour issues to deal with!”

“Craig listened to our raw ideas and transformed them into a realisable home that looks great and that we really love living in. From the initial planning stages we were impressed with Craig’s ability to adapt our ideas into a workable plan. The design stage was an easy, streamlined process with good communication and amazing results. Craig continued to be quietly efficient during the construction and completion phases and was able to advise us when concepts were unworkable or needed revision. There are some wonderful features to the house and the feel of the spaces is wonderful. We wanted a character home with light, bright and open spaces that gave a sense of timelessness – and that is exactly what we got! It has amazing street appeal and, more importantly, a great feeling of flow throughout. We just love the house and have had so many compliments on it – we even have people walking past stopping to stare and some are even brave enough to knock on the door and ask who designed it. “We picked Daniel to design our home after reviewing various portfolio's from local architects. We chose Daniel as aesthetically, his designs we quite unique and aligned with our own style. Daniel designed a beautiful house for us with genuine thought given to how you would live in the space. What’s the difference between an architect, a draftsperson and a building designer?


Architects, drafters and building designers are all able to perform the same job: Draw floor plans for your house. The biggest difference is qualification. An architect would have completed a university degree and have passed an exam to become a registered architect. A draftsperson usually would have gone to TAFE or learned their skills on the job. Building designers are often draftspeople that have gone through an additional process to become licensed and able to use that title.

The work of a building designer usually begins by interpreting your requirements into a sketched floor plan. Once agreed upon, the designer then moves on to the drafting and documentation stage, whereby drawings are submitted to council for approval. Some building designers also take care of contract management – that is, hiring builders, managing materials and labour costs, and advising you about any local council by-laws that may concern your project.
