Hobson Bay House

The Hobson Bay House sits on the edge of the original Parnell cliff face with the bay and Awatea Reserve to the east, with spectacular views out to sea through the break in the cliff face bush and mature trees. We were asked to create a new 2-storey residence within the original building envelope while providing all the practical modern necessities of an inner city townhouse.

The new dwelling is a two level building connected internally by a void and sky lit staircase. The layout is largely of an eastern orientation and aspect due to the proximity of the neighbouring residence to the north and the requirement for a vehicle turning platform to the south.

The upper level accommodates the living, dining and kitchen activities with the lower level being bedrooms, bathrooms, wine cellar and an enclosed terrace at it’s centre.

Due to the compactness of the site and the lack of access to any northern sunlight, large areas of clear glazing have been reserved to the east and south faces introducing as much sunlight as possible into the interior and creating as seamless as possible connection to the bush surrounds.

The palette of materials are sympathetic to the surrounding dwellings and colour ways of the bush being a brick tile wall cladding, clear glass, aluminium joinery, and flat membrane rooves
