Not to be nosy, but whereabouts generally are you?

I just happened to see this so i'm late, but, fwiw ... the way I found to make new friends in LA was to volunteer on campaigns. I suggest choosing an issue campaign, not a candidate campaign. (The people may be slightly less dysfunctional, and it might last longer than one season. Just know, about half the people you meet will be, um, well ... different, ime. But that doesn't mean they can't also be good friends. )

Whatever you choose, it should be something that recurs regularly ... to give everyone time to warm up to each other.

If you were in LA, and once your knee is better ... I'd suggest night hiking with the Sierra Club outings. You don't have to be a member. Hikers are great bc if you feel like talking, you can find someone. And if you don't feel like talking, no one gets offended.

There are probably Sierra Club groups everywhere though - so you might want to look, no matter where you are. Also meetups. And don't worry about politics - many of my SC friends are actually libertarians. Like, a noticeable amount. I have no idea what that means.

Congratulations on the new home. I agree with the advice above about diagnosing the irrigation first. Since the backyard's decline appears tied to the under-pressurized zone, it would make sense to have that zone repaired and confirmed working before investing in reseeding or resodding, as new grass will struggle without reliable water. One additional thought: when collecting estimates, it may help to ask each contractor how they would verify coverage uniformity across the zone, since uneven watering is a common reason a lawn fails to establish evenly. Wishing you the best with the project.

Ditto what Sigrid said about not rushing anything. Fixing the sprinklers could make a huge difference.

That's a lovely tree. I wonder what kind is it - some kind of pepper tree? Someone here will know. And congratulations on not killing your chalk sticks, blue fingers, whatever they're called - I've killed 2 of those in pots and I give up. (I'm sure I overwatered.) I like how they look.

If you fix up the lawn, and put a chair under the tree ... you might be done! ; ) Depending.

Looks like it's fairly newly planted. Maybe its calendar will calibrate once it gets through winter. In any event, that's an amazing flush of flowers.

Thanks, everyone.

That is very helpful, socalgalgw - I was wondering if there would be a downside to annual rye. Thanks!!

I see ”liriope” mentioned upthread. Be careful you don’t get the plain-green-spreads-by-underground-runners kind. You will be so, so sorry. I am.

It is my understanding that variegated liriope is not a spreader.
