How to Add a Discount

If you would like to provide your client with a discount, you can easily add a discount to a specific line item, or you can add a discount to the document subtotal.

Subtotal and line item discounts can be applied to estimates/proposals or invoices. If you add a subtotal discount to an estimate/proposal, it will carry over once you create an invoice. If you decide to partially invoice an estimate/proposal with a subtotal discount, the system will calculate the partial invoice percentage and break down the discount accordingly.

Add a Line Item Discount

If you would like to add a discount to a specific line item, you will need to input a negative amount in that line item.

To do this, directly adjust the line item cost to a negative number. For a proposal, you can adjust the cost column. For an estimate, you can adjust either the material and labor column, or both columns.

After you make a change, the total cost column will update to reflect the discount.

You can also show a discount by creating a new line item that showcases the negative amount.

To do this, click the + icon to add a new line — you can also duplicate an existing line item by clicking the three dots icon, then Duplicate.

Once the new line item is created, you can adjust the line item title and description to reflect the discount details. You can then update with a negative number. For a proposal, you can adjust the cost column. For an estimate, you can adjust either the material and labor column, or both columns.

After you make a change, the total cost column will update to reflect the discount.

Add a Subtotal Discount

If you want to give your client a discount to the total cost, you can do this in the subtotal section.

To start, scroll down to the bottom of your document where the subtotal is shown. You will see a discount line.

Here, you can adjust the title of the discount if needed by clicking on Discount, typing in your text, and selecting the check mark to save.

You can then add the discount amount — in the dropdown, either select a fixed dollar amount or a certain percentage. Add in your dollar or percentage amount in the text box, and select the check mark to save.

Please Note: If you adjust or add a line item after applying a discount, the discount value will change since the total cost has changed. You will receive an alert so you can revisit the discount and adjust if needed.
