Finding joy in functional beauty. Mathis’ interest in interior design and remodeling began at an early age. “I used to help my mom rearrange the living room; design has always been something that I enjoy,” she says. Together with husband Phil, Mathis has had a flourishing career in the home improvement industry for over 30 years. “We started with a focus on bathroom remodels, then branched out to kitchen and full-scale remodeling,” she says. Together, their goal is to help their clients by designing spaces that are both functional and beautiful.
Writing a new story for your space. For Mathis, reimagining a space and considering all its possibilities is her favorite part of the process. With each of her clients, she starts with a blank slate so she can get to know their needs, wants and project goals and work from there. “I ask my clients to make a wish list of both needs and wants related to the project they have in mind,” Mathis says. “I encourage them to start with a design board that includes styles, colors, flooring, cabinets, counters, etc.”

1. Customize Every Nook and Corner
Get creative with customization in your kitchen — if you can dream it, Mathis Custom Remodeling can build it. “Personalizing specific parts of your kitchen is really popular right now, from garages for bulky appliances to coffee corners,” Mathis says.
At this La Mesa home, the owners hoped to add some much-needed storage as well as a few specific features unique to their needs. The Mathis team dramatically expanded the kitchen’s pantry area; enlarged the island to add storage (and a wine fridge); and made dedicated spaces for a coffee bar, charging station, stand mixer and step stool.

2. Upgrade Your Kitchen Island
Kitchen islands are popular for a reason. They can be designed in any size, shape, color or stain and they can be precisely personalized to your home’s needs. For this Chula Vista home, extra space was essential. “Added space for entertaining was high on the list of needs for this project,” Mathis says. “To accommodate the client’s needs, we built two room additions, one on the back of the home in order to enlarge the kitchen and one in the front to create a great room.”
With more room to play with, the team designed a 12-foot kitchen island with plenty of storage and a roomy work area. “This client also wanted a very contemporary, dramatic design,” Mathis says. “We chose all black cabinets with black quartz on the perimeter cabinets and a beautiful white marble with black veining for the island.”

3. Eliminate Unusable Space
Cupboards are a primary culprit when it comes to unusable space. “We always opt for pantries with drawers because with cupboards there’s so much wasted space,” Mathis says. “As we design the layout of a kitchen, we’ll also optimize small, leftover spaces for features like cookie sheet storage.”
For this kitchen remodel in Bonita, the team designed and installed unique storage solutions like corner pullout drawers and floating shelves to sleekly accommodate all the homeowners’ items. The clients also had a specific sightline in mind that the Mathis team needed to work around. “They wanted the ability to look into the living room from the kitchen, so we built a custom archway and designed the cabinets around it as a focal point,” Mathis says.
