Pro Spotlight: 3 Reasons Design-Build Is Your Home’s Best Bet
Two San Diego design pros share their wisdom on why design-build is the perfect approach for your next redesign project

Who: Marie and Charles Cairns of CairnsCraft Design & Remodel
Where: San Diego
In Marie’s own words: “When you run a remodeling company, each project is your baby. Charles and I love driving around the city, passing by the homes we’ve transformed — it’s like seeing a grown-up child.”
Remodeling projects often begin by hiring an architect who draws up design plans, followed by construction bids to bring the project to life. But for many homeowners embarking on a major home renovation, working with a single company overseeing the entire design and delivery process provides a greater sense of care and comfort. “We design for our clients, not for ourselves,” says Marie Cairns, who co-owns CairnsCraft Design & Remodel with her husband, Charles. “We listen to what they need for their home to feel comfortable, functional and beautiful.”

The right place at the right time. In a moment of serendipity, Marie, who was working as a corporate administrator in Brazil, met Charles during a trip to California’s Redwood Coast, where he was building a house. He invited her to try her hand at nailing down a piece of siding — and the rest was history. Marie discovered her passion for hands-on home design and Charles found joy in working with Marie. Around the time the house was finished, the couple were married and building a business together. More than 20 years later, the two have created a successful company centered around passion, trust and a commitment to quality.
Thinking outside the box. Sometimes the hardest part of a remodeling project is shifting your own perception of your home. “Listening to our clients is an essential part of our partnership,” Charles says. “But you also need to show them what they can’t always imagine.” After living in your home for years or decades, it can be hard to consider what could be dramatically different or improved. Marie and Charles are with their clients every step of the way, offering them ideas and solutions that might never occur to them on their own. “Every job is different. Every client is unique,” Marie says. “But every completed project brings a feeling of real accomplishment that endures through the years.”

A Stress-Free One-Stop Shop
One major advantage of working with a design-build company? It provides every service you need for your home remodeling project. Interior designers, structural engineers, installation experts and more are all on staff to collaboratively execute your design vision. This centralized coordination streamlines the entire process, which results in big savings for you.
At this home in La Jolla, the homeowners dreamed of adding a private ADU for their longtime nanny. After working closely with Marie on their home, the owners knew they could trust the team at CairnsCraft to create a wonderfully welcoming tiny home from start to finish. From the design of the space, which included careful attention to storage, to the final touches, the homeowners had a partner throughout the process. “We selected all the furnishings together,” Marie says. “We wanted a mix of colors and materials for something fun and innovative.”

Cost Control
The most stressful aspect of any design process is cost, especially when the numbers come as a surprise. “We provide homeowners with construction budgets at three different intervals in the design process,” Charles says. “These budgets enable the homeowner to make informed decisions on the design scope, selection of finish materials, fixtures and appliances early on.” All along the way, the homeowners are empowered to make choices they’re comfortable with.
For this home in Carlsbad, CairnsCraft worked closely with the owners to select the materials, finishes and central features, from the stunning freestanding tub and his-and-hers sinks to the large mirrors and LED lighting. The final product is a striking and inviting spa-like space that was delivered without any added stress from hidden costs. “As a design-build company, we work both with and for the client, guiding them each step of the way, from inspiration to the final completion,” Marie says. Feeling confident in the design costs, the homeowners have asked CairnsCraft to tackle another bathroom remodel in their home.

Partnership Through Project Management
The best designers always make the design phase of your remodeling project fun. But what about when construction begins, walls are torn down and issues arise? Practiced project managers have the patience and skills to coordinate all the chaos, minimize problems and make the process as enjoyable as possible. “As a project manager, I want to make sure the client feels comfortable and has all their questions answered,” Marie says. “Our schedule is always totally transparent and we provide images and updates at the end of each day.”
In this La Jolla home, the entire family loves to spend time in the kitchen. The CairnsCraft team considered what was most important to the homeowners and created an open-concept space for entertaining, with large folding windows for natural light and a secondary sink for the homeowner, who loves to cook his catch of the day. Marie was so closely connected to the client’s passions and the kitchen’s outcome, she even had a chance to taste some “before-and-after” results. “The kids love to cook and when the project was finished, they baked me a banana bread to show me they can now cook even better,” she says.
