There’s nothing like colour and pattern to bring joy to your home, and after a difficult year that’s something many of us are craving right now. Paint and wallpaper are two of the most effective tools in your decorating toolbox, allowing you to refresh just about every part of your home with minimal outlay and fuss. Better yet, you can easily change things down the track when you’re ready for a new look.
Colour experts at Resene share the 10 biggest trends in colour and pattern coming your way this year, and some fun and easy ways you can work them into your home.

1. Olive & army green
“Paint provides an almost instant transformation to any project – and it’s so satisfying seeing what you picture in your mind come to life in and around your home,” Brenda Ngatai, a Resene colour consultant on Auckland’s North Shore. “These days, most paints are environmentally friendly, and water-based, which means almost anyone can rejuvenate their home with paint.”
Our love of green and all things nature-inspired shows no sign of slowing down, but this year expect to see warmer greens with yellowed undertones emerging, such as olive and army green.

They’re cosy and comforting and work beautifully in a lounge, family room, bedroom or home office. Colour picks to try include Resene Olive Green, Resene Seaweed or Resene Woodland.
“These earthy greens have a calm and reassuring feel, and make you feel closer to nature,” says Ngatai. “They work best in spaces that receive a lot of natural light.”
Worried that olive or army green might be too dark for your walls? Choose a softer green for walls and then add in one or two smaller doses of stronger green in painted accessories or furniture.

2. 1970s vibe
Get groovy with a brown-based palette across your walls, floors and furniture; think tones such as espresso, terracotta and avocado green.
To recreate the too-cool-for-school look of this bedroom, use colours Resene Anglaise on walls with curvy stripes in Resene Fuel Yellow and Resene Digeridoo, paired with Resene Colorwood Bark on the floor.
You can up the earthy, vintage vibe by accessorising this scheme with shagpile rugs, velvet cushions and handmade, artisanal pieces such as pottery, macrame and dried flowers.
Give a brown-based colour scheme an elegant, modern twist: Add pops of brass, gold, pale marble and rich fabrics like leather, velvet or raw silk.

3. Escapist wallpaper
Wallpaper is an unbeatable way to add depth and interest to your interior, and it’s bang on-trend in 2022.
Wild and whimsical is where it’s at; think blowsy florals, botanical murals, geometrics and designs that replicate timber, stone and brick. You’ll find a wide selection of show-stopping wallpapers at Resene ColorShops.
“It’s easy to update a room with wallpaper,” says Ngatai. “If you’re DIYing it for the first time, it pays to do a little homework first – you’ll find instructions and a step-by-step video on the Resene website, including a tool to help you work out how much wallpaper you’ll need.”

“Or pop in-store and grab a copy of the Resene Recommended paint system chart, which gives you information on sealers, sandpaper grit, sizing and paste,” she says.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match wallpapers: Many collections come with a range of plainer styles and patterns in a variety of colours that are designed to go together. You might, for example, use a plain wallpaper in the hallway, with a pattern from the same collection in the living room.

4: Dark & dramatic
After spending so much time indoors this year, many of us are ready to break out of our comfort zone and try something new – and that includes embracing bolder colours in our homes.
Rich, smouldering palettes consisting of black, charcoal and inky blue enlivened with touches of caramel are standout trends right now. Colour combos such as Resene All Black, Resene Colorwood Sheer Black and Resene Colorwood Natural create a dramatic and cocooning feel in a lounge, dining room or media room, and set the perfect tone for those laid-back gatherings with friends and family that run long into the night.
If you paint your walls a deep colour, you may need to adjust your lighting: Use lamps, accent lighting and dimmer switches to help set the right mood.

5. Paint effects are back
Paint effects were huge in the 1980s and they’re back in the spotlight this year. And what’s not to love? Effects such as limewashing, concrete effects and hand-painted murals add a wonderful sense of texture and personality to walls, furniture, accessories and more.
“Resene Rockcote textured, plastered effects for interior and exterior creates a natural look and are a great way to create a statement wall or entranceway,” says Ngatai. “On the Resene website, you’ll find a whole page dedicated to Resene special effects and how to use them.”
Creating a paint-effect mural? For the best results, plan out the design on paper first and then use a pencil to mark it on the wall before you start painting.

6. Classic blues
Blue is a colour that never goes out of style – it’s a timeless classic that works in all manner of decorating schemes, from beachy Hamptons-style to uber-contemporary.
Just about any blue goes in 2022, from coastal blues such as Resene Nepal and aquas such as Resene Hippie Blue to saturated blues such as a Resene True Blue.
And they work equally well in large or small doses; “If you’re looking for a quick transformation, front doors and landing steps are great one-day or weekend projects,” says Ngatai. “They only take a small amount of paint and will give your home an instant lift.”
Soften the edges of the room and create a cocooning vibe: Run your chosen blue from the walls right to the ceiling.

7. Characterful neutrals
After decades of whites and cool greys, warm neutrals have wormed their way into our hearts over the last year or two. And it’s easy to see the appeal; they’re versatile, easy to live with and a cinch to decorate around.
This year sees a shift towards complex neutrals with more depth, such as biscuit beiges, blush suedes, steeped whites, olive taupe, slate greys and complex pewters, all of which bring nuance and depth to rooms such as bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
If a warm neutral scheme is top of your wish list, try combining Resene Quarter Black White, Resene Double Black White, Resene Pearl Bush, Resene Alpaca and Resene Kangaroo.
Searching for the perfect neutrals? Check out the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection, which is available in palettes or as a fandeck; it has a full range of gorgeous neutrals from whites through to blacks, with up to six strength variations of each colour.

8. Zen zone
Health and wellness will continue to be a major focus in 2022, and this will trickle down to the colours we’ll seek to surround ourselves with.
Create the look by mixing soft, calming hues drawn from nature such as Resene Peppermint and Resene Double Rice Cake (a soft buff) on walls with a Resene timber stain on floors and furniture that allows the wood’s natural grain to show through.
Set up your own relaxing zen corner in an open-plan room: Define the area by painting a section of the wall in a gentle, natural hue and add a medley of plants in pots painted in tonal shades (Resene testpots are the ideal size for this).

9. A new take on tonal
The tonal look is one we’ve heard a lot about in the last couple of years. The trend isn’t going anywhere in 2022 but it has evolved into something altogether more interesting; rather than using multiple strengths of a single colour in a room, the look now combines a variety of different colours with similar undertones.
For example, rather than applying Resene Tea in various strengths across your walls, floor, trims and furniture, create a more characterful look by using Resene Tea on walls, Resene Blanc on the floor, Resene Bison Hide on furniture and trims, and Resene Tapa on accessories.
Rejuvenate dated furniture with an on-trend chalk or matte finish: It’s also a great way to add an artisanal vibe to a room. Try Karen Walker Chalk Colour and Waxes from Resene ColorShops.

10. Vibrant reds
Love it or hate it, but red is officially back in vogue. And we’re not just talking cherry and fire engine red, but dark and saturated reds such as mulberry and reddish plum too.
Bright reds are not for the faint-hearted and work best in small doses says Ngatai; “If you’re going to use red in a scheme, make sure it doesn’t overpower its surroundings – pay attention to the amount of red you use, where you use it and its undertones.”

Painting one or two kitchen or dining chairs in bright red and adding pops of red in a painted wall or cabinet treatment is a fun way to embrace the trend.
“Another way red will be used in 2022 is inspired by 1960s designer Mary Quant – create two or three large, curved block patterns on the wall, which you can do with masking tape, balanced out with clean white on the surrounding areas,” says Ngatai.
Make red-painted furniture and accessories pop: Use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss enamel to add a subtle shine. Or go for an even higher gloss level with Resene Enamacryl gloss.
