Are you keeping the red wall? I would place the bed on the wall opposite the stair entry - a proven location for more restful, secure sleep. I don't see any electrical outlets on the walls, so not sure how you'll manage to add attractive task and accent lighting. What does the headboard of the bed look like? That might influence your direction with decor. Usually it is best to select the bedding and then the paint and carpet. Paint can be custom blended to work with your fabrics and textiles. If you haven't bought paint and carpet yet, hold off and get the bedding sorted out first.

Hello decoenthusiate, the red is going, after painting last night it now looks like this!

The bed used to be opposite the stairs but the low ceiling seemed to get lower in mornings and I'd often bonk my head. I was thinking about putting the bed right next to the stairs and have a cool rail running up the stairs.

so we have a lot of wood.

Task lighting is lamps; accent lighting would highlight your beams (an architectural feature) or a plant or picture.

I'm curious about what is on the other side of the door - looks like a swinging half-door? I can see a railing above the steps, but see-thru, to keep the space open. Black metal with metal intersection wires, structural interest.

the other side of the swinging door is my large walk-in closet. It is also a storage place for the rest of the house too, so pretty messy.

What is the height at the highest point? At the point where the ceiling meets the knee wall?

in response to pure michagan. The highest point of the ceiling is the wall on your left as you're walking up the stairs, that is 2.3m and the lowest point is opposite this and is 1.1m tall. The actual room size is 3x4m with the stairs being 900mm wide.

Thanks liz duer, I was wondering about putting the bed parellel to the stairs, or parellel to the stairs and pushed up against the lowest wall like what pure michagan suggested. What do you think?

Also does anyone have any cool modern ideas for the wall that was red beside the stairs?

Shelves, wallpaper, paint features, anything can happen to this wall but just keep it lightish colors because the carpet will be dark. Ideas??

You could really have some fun with wallpaper that would have a big impact on this small space. I have ideas, but need some input about what you like. How would you describe your design vibe?

Are you going with same style as the rest of your house. What colors are used there? What colors do you like? Is there a bathroom involved? I know so many questions. For safety reasons some kind of wall or railing would be a good idea. See through would be good if you like more light and space. Pat

Is the bed for 2 people? I myself don't like to be up against a wall and have to crawl over someone to get out. Pat

A lot of our house is double blanc, a very light fawney cream (that's what i would call it). and we have a lot of rimu wood. But my bedroom is at the top of the house 3rd storey kind of so completely shut off from the rest of the house. So ... no I don't want to match it with the rest of the house. A one person bedroom.

The stripes would be very good on that wall. You can add shelving or framed photographs. Looks like you want playful and creative. You can look at wallpaper online or in Houzz.
