    “In 2009 I purchased a 2 bedroom 30 year old Brick and Tile house north facing on the shores of the Panmure Lagoon. Unbeknownst to me at the time it had won house of the year when constructed all those years before! After living, (and as you do planning), in it a few years, I engaged Alpha 1 Builders carry out the extensive renovations which incorporated ; opening the house out, create two new levels and completely upgrade the house and fittings. All that was left after one week were the external walls. Wrapped in plastic the work began in earnest. Paul's attention to detail and planning meant the build was completed on time and on budget. Of course things changed during the build as they do, but this was made easy by the professional and trademan like care taken by all his staff. Alterations by myself to the original specifications were costed and approved before work was carried out so I never felt concern that the project was running away on me. When Paul suggested that he enter it in house of the year I was enthusiastic and then overjoyed to receive a gold medal. The finished product is a 4 Bedroom easy flowing house with three bathrooms, an enormous rumpus/theater room and open plan Kitchen/Dining and lounge area, opening onto a sweeping sun-drenched deck that displays unobstructed views of the water. Now after three years of living in our house we still enjoy it everyday and find it works well and flows naturally. It's not unusual to sit on one of the superb north facing decks sipping a Flat White gazing out over the waters and pondering the choice of going to work or,,, having another!”

Nick and his team show up on time, get the job done and don't settle for less than the highest quality work from their team and their contractors. The house that Nick built for my mum is elegant, beautiful and practical. His attention to detail shows on every surface, every corner and every function. He also worked with me when issues with dealing with trees on our property came up unexpectedly. He came up with a solution that fitted everyone involved. I doubt another builder would have worked with us with so much respect.”

    “As a homeowner for 33 years, I've had my fair share of local builders, companies and trades people attending to various house repairs on my house. Yet: the customer services and liaison provided by Rob McEwan at Refresh Renovations, Rodney surpasses them all. With Rob's committment to providing excellent service, he confidently guided a fantastic team of builders to replace rotten floorboards in two areas caused by leaks, replace a rotten interior wall, organise a gib stopper, and organise new carpet. I didn't have to do a thing: very grateful Rob had the reins and he competently steered the ship. For each of these tasks, at every developing stage, he kept me in the loop, so I rate his communication skills very highly. His attention to detail where nothing was too much bother for him; will stay in my mind for a long time. Five Stars, absolutely.”

    “We have recently built a house in the Wairarapa NZ using Customkit Buildings Ltd as the designer and supplier of materials to lock-up stage. At all times we found Customkit to be thoroughly professional but also caring and interested in our project. At no time did they view it as just another job, they were engaged and interested in the build from the initial concept meetings until the house was totally finished. I felt they were as proud of the end product as we were. Many members of the team have been to visit, no small undertaking considering the site is about 650k from their base.     What kind of builder do you need?


    Apart from finding a builder who is reliable and local to you, there’s a few other things you want to consider. If you’re after a prefab home design, a design and construction company may be the better choice. If you’re doing small general renovation works like installing doors or floors, a general builder will be sufficient. Once you move to more complicated projects like renovating a whole house, adding an extension or a second storey, or working on a heritage building, looking for a specialist may be the way to go. They would have worked on projects like yours before and know the common pitfalls. For example, someone who specialises in extensions will be able to foresee challenges you will face, and can help you plan and budget in the most efficient way possible.

    Find the right tradie for your home renovation project


    There’s a few ways you can go about finding the specialised builder you need. Referrals from friends, family, or even your architect or draftsperson are a good place to start.
