lighting for tiny 4' x 7' two-story foyer with dormer

Hi - I'm building a new home with a very small - 7' wide x 4' deep (door to stairs) foyer. 9' ceilings on the first floor, sloped ceiling with narrow 30" wide dormer on the 2nd floor... The dormer and the smallness of the space have me questioning all of the advice and guides I've read - should the entry fixture really be centered on the dormer window? Any idea what size? I think it needs to be slender, but how tall? The dormer window is about 4.5' tall... Thanks very much for any ideas!

The area is small. I wouldn’t put a pendant up at the dormer window…how would get to it to clean or replace a bulb?

Now if you hang a pendant from the ceiling for lighting the hall, it won’t center on the front door…am I right…may not be seeing the space correctly. And the largest pendant you can have is 11” wide.

So I suggest you talk to your electrician about installing up/down sconces. Positioned correctly, it would be a stunning application.

Thanks for the quick response & how gorgeous are those sconces! On a straight stair like mine, what would you do, 3 or 4 of those? A flush mount or pendant at the top of the stairs? Even though it looks off in the photo, the door is centered in the entry and under the dormer - I just kept reading that in a 2-story foyer, your fixture should not hang below the second floor and, in fact, should be centered on the window if you have one... if I center a fixture on that window it just seems too high... but, then, what height to drop it to - if it's hanging at floor level on the 2nd floor, I think that might look odd, too, because in a 7 x 4 space, it's right there - a chandelier at floor level in an 8 x 10 foyer would be far enough away from the 2nd floor balcony railing not to feel like you're going to step on it. I did find a beautiful Hubbardton Forge 17" tall x 11" wide chandelier, but I think I would want it to hang completely below the second floor and then all I would see is chain on the 2nd floor... Thanks again for the sconce idea - that may just be the way to go!

Your electrician should help you with placement.

Chandeliers are a statement, but you can also make a statement with sconces…Just make sure the light goes up and down. The uplighting, at night, is gorgeous.

Thank you! Almost identical set up and I love the way your fixture looks... your foyer looks deeper than mine - do you have a measure from door to stairs? I've never used sconces outside of a bathroom but I'm really warming to the idea - thinking it will also help break up the large expanse of wall... being a chandelier gal at heart, though, it's so helpful to see how your light looks in a much more finished space than mine - I really appreciate the photo!

It is just a smidge under 5 feet. I have a bridge going across at the top, so you see the living room as well. I did a coordinating light in there, also with the long cords. I like the effect of the coordinating fixtures, but your layout may be completely different than mine

That is gorgeous... I have a little balcony, but no bridge/view to the other side - your choices are just beautiful!

I was going to suggest a recessed light on either side of the dormer, on the sloped part, which is what Helen has. Not sure whether I'd do a chandelier or not after that, but it might combine well with sconces on the stairway to be sure that each part of the space has sufficient light.

I agree - the recessed lights on the slopes, such as Helen's, are perfect for my space, too - I'm excited about that!

Pendant lighting would look beautiful showing from the second story and dropping down to the first story like rain fall. Led bulbs do not burn out so fast and last. Our glass would need light feather dusting twice a year.
