Changing timber colour?

I'm wondering if anyone has any expert knowledge or experience changing the colour of stained timber furniture? I have a gorgeous hand-carved teak wall unit that is stained very dark brown (almost black). It looks very heavy and old-fashioned. I'd like to lighten the timber colour if it's possible. Advice would be welcome.

Try sanding a bit in an inconspicuous spot, Stains may go too deep to take out.

Are you sanding the furniture back to raw? if so feastwaston do lots of staining. you can get them in the paint section of bunnings. Just paint and wipe off is the key and do a small section at the time. Don't do it in a hot place just make sure you do bit by bit and it will come out like a pro did it! There are more cons than pros, I'm afraid. Near black floors will show every speck of dust and need constant maintenance. They also will suck up a lot of light, so you need to add lots of extra lighting. If they are shiny, they also show marks just as a mirror does. They are not the best for re-sale properties either, as most people prefer something more medium toned for the long term. I recommend going with a more classic floor, and then adding black accents in furniture, etc. Your kitchen could be mostly white cabinets with some very dark stained sections. Sorry for the delay....well I still haven't quite got to the floor yet. I have friends and family advising that black would show up every bit of dust etc and one friend who had a shiny black floor and felt that she was forever mopping, and if the light shone on the floor on the wrong angle you could see where the mop had been. I think this would frustrate me too much especially with young children and a cat so I think a whitewash look could be a good option, or reclaimed battered timber perhaps.......see why I haven't chosen the floor yet. Lol. You could always go a black but a weathered matt reclaimed timber that could look good too. Good luck!

I've read that ordinary household bleach might do the trick. I'm going to try it on an inconspicuous part and see how it goes. Sanding isn't really an option because it has hand carved pictures all over it and sanding will take out the finer detail in the pictures.
