White quartz vs white granite

I cannot decide. I understand the heat limitations for quartz, and the stain potential for granite, but am looking for advice from anyone who can share their experience. I cook a lot, and it’s hard to decide if I want to be more concerned about red wine droplets soaking into the granite or having to use a trivet under everything when I’m making large meals... any advice is helpful

I love my quartz - I went with it because I cook with lots of acidic foods... lemon, lime, tomato, wine etc. I am also good about using trivets anyway - and I also have a large 2 x 2 foot cutting board (1.5 inches thick) near the range. If you live with folks who won't pay attention to where the hot items are set down, go with granite. And not all granite needs re-sealing.

Like Amanda says, though, I have never needed to use trivets under plates upon which I've dispensed hot food. This is instead a rule I use for hot cooktop or oven cookware, and I do use my George Forman and my crock pot on either a trivet or the aforementioned cutting board. My rice maker has feet, and so I do leave that item directly on the quartz countertop. Just checked - it is an off-white quartz there (I I keep the rice cooker out and in the same spot all the time), and life is fine.

Following! I am having the same question! Hubby is our main cook and loves putting hot things straight on our (impossible-to-clean, hence replacing) tile. He doesn't want to have to bother with sealing the granite, but isn't sure he wants to use quartz and thus need a trivet.

Trivet use is required by engineered stone manufacturers as well as the Natural Stone Institute, the trade association of the natural stone industry, making them equal to Corian in the heat department.

Estone will stain too; Corian will not.

~$400 including expedited shipping. My GC just had his regular countertop guy do them, which wasn't great.... he had trouble making clean cuts. If I were going to do it again I would have pressed for someone with expertise to cut them. You can see in the image that the facing is not made of the stone peak, because too much was broken during the cutting to make the mitered edge. I'm a little bummed, but mostly pleased with the surface (which is the important part) thus far.

I would consider something light with some other colors to mix in like this. http://t.homedepot.com/p/Silestone-2-in-Quartz-Countertop-Sample-in-Mont-Blanc-SS-Q0220/203674451/ I like the wood paneling and would paint it a white with a warm feel to it. A white will reflect a lot of light from your large window. I wouldn't paint the window casing as it might tie in better with the rest of the house. Good luck!!

Rather than removing the edging, I would add to its width and this wil make the cabinetry look custom and paint it white. I would also keep the corner shelving and replace your accessories - one item/shelf and related to each other. You could add a great fixture instead of the pot light, change the faucet and hardware. Suggest carrarra marble backsplash (don't put the rack back up behind stove) and there are so many pattern choices. It's also interesting how they have laid the tile in the last picture, which I think would work really well with your set up and will save a bit of money on marble. A dark quartz or granite would be complimentary and warm up all of the white. So we have finally decided on a kitchen design: Taken inspiration from : this is the floor plan. The dinning area will be moved to next to the steps, in front of the alfresco area. The family room will be in front of the kitchen with another outdoor area next to it. But dilemma not is that we cannot decide on plain cabinet doors or shaker style. The colour of the doors will be Satin White with black knobs matching the black granite sink and charcoal glass splash back. The bench top will most likely be something similar to Calcutta Quartz. I like the modern simplicity of plain doors but i don't want it to look too clinical. I like how shaker style adds a bit of character to the whole area, but i don't want it to look too traditional. What do you think? Any other style suggestions?

Every countertop choice has it's pros and cons. You will absolutely need a trivet of some sort under a hot pot if you install quartz. If you like the look of the white granite, ask for a sample and test it at home to see if anything stains it. As for sealing natural stone? It's really not hard. I seal mine a few times a year and it's as easy as cleaning windows with Windex.

Have you considered porcelain? Its both heat and stain resistant?

I had super white quartz for 3 years and cook a ton, using trivet was no biggie..i actually like to use our large wood cutting boards to put very hot pots on. But I never had to use trivets for plates with hot food etc. And occasionally beet juice etc. would stain the countertop but just a little bit of barkeepers friend, gently is a miracle worker. Just my own experience.
