Help: Front inside entrance

I would like to redecorate my front entrance inside my home.

Presently I have 12 foot ceilings and large closet. The front entrance opens up into my kitchen, living room and dining room.

The walls are all white, cupboards are white shiny, windows and front door black. Floors are medium brown colour.

Hi! I think if you move the vase to the left of the table and place a few items in front of it, it would be more warm and inviting. Thanks for the extra pics. Still thinking along the same line. Trim the bushes by the sidewalk to make the sidewalk more visible and accessible. If you can, replace the package with new door with clear glass or no glass and new sidelights or none. Put in a courtyard that comes out to the white wall with whatever works for you. Pavers, pavers and gravel, low decking, concrete, tile, brick. Anything. Add bench , chairs , mini trees in pots flowers. Make it welcoming. Could even add a trellis over the area. Deck could be made smaller and planting beds put in under Windows for small shrubs or flowers. Grass in the area between the ac unit and the driveway. Add a walk way from drive to the deck in material that works withe the rest. I would add pictures but don't know how.

I had a similar situation replacing a thin porch roof, the down pipes that spoilt the simple lines that the posts and flat roof had, basically down pipes just looked just looked heavy and ugly. I fitted the gutters in level as these are short anyway and don't need a fall, but left off the spouting. Then by suspending a heavy* galvanized chain from the centre of the outlet down into large buckets set into the ground, which is filled with rocks or small lumps of concrete, the water will trickle down the chain. (that is a thicker gauge, not heavy* weight). You might also want to anchor the bottom of each chain onto a lump of concrete. You don't have to anchor the bottom, but you don't want anyone to be encouraged to swing on them. Obviously you won't see the buckets, but do need something to capture the water that runs down the chain. Small holes in the buckets allow water to run out gradually. The chains will hang down straight under there own weight, the look is more 'elegant'. If you get so much rain blowing off the chain that it blows onto the posts or house, it's very likely you won't be standing outside, unless you like getting soaked.

Hi Rachael, Your asymmetrical house form is a very strong visual element and sits very well in this bold and rugged landscape. On the other side of the house from the entry door, the windows and doors are grouped and aligned to create a secondary relationship between them, which pleases the eye and works within the strong form. On the side with the entrance door, this doesn't happen. The scattered size and positioning of the woodstore, windows and doors do not work together to lead the eye to any particular place, nor do they relate to the form of the house. As a starting point, something to draw the eye to the entrance to invite people in will create a secondary focus. Because the house is a very strong form, you want to work with it or complement it, not try to create something that tries to outdo it. You also want something large enough to provide shelter both to keep people from the weather and to make it seem visually welcoming. You have a few materials already in this building, timber and stone, that you can use that will provide a contrast to the corrugate wall but will also make connections with the other parts of the building, and make the shelter become part of the whole rather than look like an afterthought. I would look at creating a porch form with enough visual strength to draw the eye and also try to tie in a few other elements to reduce the scattered look.

Thanks Paul for the idea. What about on the right side of the closet? I have a small cupboard and two shelves….should I paint or add something on the wall?

I like the wood slat wall. You can add art or a mirror to the wall. Maybe a low-profile picture light over the mirror or artwork to increase the lighting in that area.

The shelving looks busy. Perhaps remove the shelves and put art over the low cabinet.

You could hang a nice tapestry, a rug, a round mirror, or a lovely big tree branch spray painted. Just mount it on the wall there.

The sectional placement is creating three very tight travel paths that are about 2 ft? wide around it and also hemming in the entry - one is between the back of the sectional and the countertop and two are on each side to access the living room. If you rotate the sectional to face the kitchen, it will eliminate the paths and open up the spaces. You can add a larger entry rug and hang large art with a gallery light above for ambient lighting by the entry door.

It looks like a very small space, and you don't have to fill every inch of space. It might be best to just do a piece of artwork, plant, or a floating small console.
