What is the measurement of the space between the peninsula’s and the hallway???

@dreamer It was originally 800mm in these plans but it is now 900mm as we moved the wall back.

900 is fine and def oven and cooktop and microwave in the u shape area away from hall. Hall should be all cupboards.

best arrangement also depends on type and size of appliances as well as choice of cabinet maker...do you intend to have custom made cabinets or DIY eg with Kaboodle or similar and do you want an underbench or wall oven and cooktop and what width of fridge space??

Definitely only cupboards on the left hand walkway wall. They only need to be 300mm to 400mm deep, to store all food, small appliances, and household items. You have told us you have 900mm between peninsula and walkway wall. If you reduce the cupboards to only 300mm storage, that would give 1200mm walkway. So you could then think about extending the kitchen peninsula’s by 200mm leaving a 1000mm walkway.

And instead of having the hard to access cupboard next to the dishwasher. Make it a cupboard/drawers that is accessed from adjacent room.

Do you have something to show original kitchen, do you have a servery to the family, can't read dimensions etc,

You could consider a complete change of zone/positioning that would give you a cleaner / more streamlined kitchen design that is not in the middle of the flow of the space and would potentially open up the back room for a more spacious living experience - no changes to walls

Depends on how far you're going with your project but just a thought

Thank you so much for all the suggestions everyone! To answer some of the questions, I’ll add the original floorplan. The kitchen was a galley but is a U now due to building a wall between original kitchen and dining room.

The original plans had 450mm floor to ceiling cabinets in the hall which allowed plenty of room for the walkway. I’m not sure when the fridge and oven moved to that space but i suspect it was to try and increase bench space.

We would prefer a wall tower but are open to an underbench oven to again, increase bench space. Positioning the microwave would become an issue. I have considered buying a convection microwave and installing beside an underbench oven but would that be too low for the microwave function?

We have paid a deposit for the kitchen. Our builder will install it. It was designed by a DIY arm of several significant brands here in SA because of that (and the family connections of our builder - South Australians will understand….lol!)

We avoided but are now considering moving our sink (ergh, expense!) to the middle of the U to keep the bench/breakfast bar to the family fully clear.

I do think we are overthinking things a bit too much and as such we are struggling to come up with what would be the simplest but most aesthetic fix.

Have you built the new wall between the dining and old kitchen yet? What will this new small space be used for? If the wall isnt built yet, then I suggest you re look at your spaces. A walk through kitchen past hot appliances is not good and is dangerous. Especially when there is, by your new proposed plan, no other way to access the back of house.

yeah i’d be reconsidering your plans before you go too far….if you really have to stick to this concept you‘ll have to get the oven out if the hall run, slim the hall cuboards down to even 350-400mm (aim for 1m min clearance for passage) and although really not ideal consider pinching the space/depth for the fridge alcove from the bedroom it backs onto…it feels like the flow of the original galley/walk through setup connected the spaces better but you may well have your reasons for closing it in but tbh it feels a bit awkward & odd

I c u r making the middle bedroom larger by shifting the hall. That will match the size of the rear bedroom saving arguments.

@Kate this..... great alt option...totally cleans up & maintains the passage width from entry & flow thru to back....... if that wall hasn;t been built yet they could potentially pinch a bit more depth for the fridge - typically I'd try for 750mm alcove depth to allow sufficient ventilation...and depending on preferences on island bench length possibly could do a side pantry/appliance setup.....but yes this will involve plumbing changes/costs etc but worth the investment to get the layout working properly

Very late, my internet has been down since yesterday but might still work even with the new wall. The second gives access to the living room from the kitchen and the kitchen can have a servery window to the alfresco

Siriusky, The new wall is the dashed line on your plan….? In the middle of your kitchen. (Plus the new bedroom wall)

But an excellent idea if the OP has not built the wall yet.

I have left the new wall as an invisible wall, between the kitchen and the old dining space going by what has been posted it has sadly been built.

@siriuskey This is amazing and I would have loved to do this but yes, sadly the wall is built as we need a dedicated home office.

@kate Yep, two teen bedrooms the same size! And a home office in the old dining room. The back ’corner of doom’ as we call it is actually a study nook but it has no windows! Right where a window would go is our hot water service and directly above is the solar pool blanket so no skylight either! It is so frustrating! So it will be a mud room of sorts. I would have loved to orient our kitchen as per your plan but a large timber bifold lives along that wall to the pergola which is odly missing from the mudmap of my house!

@Paul Di Stefano Design Many moons (aka 3 years ago) when we started this journey, it was our exact plan to run our kitchen along that longest wall and turn that area into the heart of the home with the kids hidden out the back…lol! Sadly, it was eye wateringly expensive because of the distance to the existing plumbing.

We think we have come up with a solution and I will post once the plans are back. Basically we will have a front formal half of the house with the new dedicated office and the rear informal which will include the kitchen, meals and family room. No appliances in the hallway!

Separating the dining room from the kitchen to use as study’s or bedrooms is a very common change to these 80’s volume builds here in Adelaide. Future plans include extending into the outdoor area under the pergola and moving the pergola/alfresco to the other side of the awkwardly placed (not built by us) pool. This will connect the front and back of the house via 2 routes instead of 1 once again. We never use the front door though, so to us separating the spaces this way won’t change the way we live at all.

Andrea good to hear that you think you have sorted....your plans make more sense knowing your decisions for how you're using the other spaces / living needs / other obstacles / existing aspects etc...sounds like you've rationalised it and it's been going for a while
