kitchen island help

Should keep a nice clean island or have a seperate step up section to incorporate the stud that can’t be moved?
The biggest pro for me is that the power points could go on the stepped up part. I really do not like power points on the side of islands, nor do I like the idea of a pop up outlet.

I’m assuming , by “stud” you mean the support pillar. In my opinion it depends on what style of home you are wanting. Sleek, clean lines, or more casual. If power points are an important issue, then the stepped up island would work for you.

Looks like you have several things to consider in the layout. What the view out the window ? Do you really want to see more of whats outside? Cooking is always best on the outside wall to get it vented, island cooking is a last resort, downdraft dont work well at all and the island hood is typically obstructive. Looks like the wall should come out to open the space up. Best advice is to have a designer come to your home and see it in person. There are costs associated with every change and it is very difficult to judge just from photos.The design phase is the most important part of any kitchen remodel the builder is only going to install it as the plans layout. Find a great designer that makes house calls :)

With the pantry being located where it is, it provides a opportunity to make it inbuilt and continue your bench top along. This would then provide more bench space and would make sure you are using that wall to its full potential. However for space and flow and to make your kitchen more ascetically pleasing, we would suggest keeping the island bench and making the appliances integrated. This provides opportunity to make that far wall a feature wall, which can be as simple as a blackboard or pictures, to making it a colour feature (depending on you cabinetry) or even to make it high class you could create a wood paneling feature. I hope this helps, either way you can add bonus features to your kitchen, you can create more storage and bench space with changing the pantry, or you could make a design feature out of that wall. 100% definitely incorporate the column - it stands out way less - use/see it as a creative constraint and opportunity to do something unique and you get benefits with deeper design, more interesting/stepped island and extra storage

Hello Dil-Emma, from a functional perspective I think incorporating the post into the Kitchen Island is your best option as if it was left isolated it will create an obstruction too close to the back of your island bench. Having the step-up works for you regarding power point placement and it still provides you with good work-area put down space.

My only suggestion would be to consider making a longer Island and Longer wall run of cabinetry so you have more sitting space at the back of the island and also be able to move the cooktop further away from the corner. I would also extent the Island cabinetry on the working side and do away with the stool as suggested by Kate. If you need extra seating you can always make the island lower benchtop deeper to around 1200mm so it protrudes further towards the post allowing seating for 2 at the end. (Cabinetry can also be made deeper for support underneath along with extra storage.)

With longer benchtops don't be afraid to go over 3100mm with stone tops because with the right Stonemasons and state-of-the-art machinery Butt Joints in tops today are close on invisible.

Unfortunately I can’t extend either bench any further as this would impede on the family area too much
