How many bedrooms do you want to end up with?

We would like 5 bedrooms. Where you’ve put the new kitchen, dining and living we wanted to knock out our existing garage and put a large single bay shed. Then thinking awning out the back connected to where I wanted the living to open onto the back yard. I do agree about the laundry space and like your suggestion.

What’s the thought process in knocking down the garage to build a shed in its place?

Our garage is very old and needs a lot of TLC so we thought it’d be easier to knock it down and have a large shed with extra wide roller door to fit the car and gym plus storage in a little better. Since these plans they actually built in between the garage and house and it is a mess. It’s got a little dungeon door and everything.

Looks like wall between hall and kitchen has already been removed and replaced with structural beam sitting on laundry wall. So get structural advice on taking out walls. Your house has limited storage. I have kept linen closet in old laundry but with sliding doors. The new European laundry is small for family of 6. Would prefer separate toilet.

Can you supply a google earth shot of your property, which way is North and what is the house built with, Brick and tile on concrete slab. And a couple of photos would help, thanks

what is the length and width of your whole block, what is the distance from the outside kitchen wall to the side boundary, the distance from front of the house to the front boundary and what is the distance of the pool fence from side of house and existing shed...is the house on a slab or steps up from the ground and did you mean to add an extension to the house as well as the new shed/garage or use only existing house for new rooms?

I’m not a plan person and it of course depends on your budget and how long you plan to be there. My thoughts are to create a bedroom zone at the front, and then living at the rear. You will need a well set up outdoor area to function as additional living space for a large family. So I’d convert kitchen and dining to main and ensuite, lounge to the two bedrooms, laundry to main bath/laundry. Then the existing bathroom, main bedroom and bedroom 2 become an L shape open plan area with the new kitchen located in the bathroom corner. Big changes but does minimise plumbing relocation and creates defined sleeping a living areas.

Sorry new to all of this but where we live we would need to put ourselves into significant debt to afford a house these days and we have a low loan currently so doing some renovations would be cheaper then trying to find a 5 bed 2 bath house with a pool. Would love to minimise the need to do extensive internal structural changes but just trying to gauge what others think too so thanks for all your input so far. Google earth image with current info of our layout. Our driveway is steep and our front yard is on a retaining wall and all round our pool and back yard is another retaining wall to the next level up. Our garage keeps our main car in it with a small gym also but has a support beam and pole in it so the space is hard to utilise. Our 2nd car and trailer live on the road cause we only have a single driveway. We can’t extend out into garage cause we would lose the car indoor storage and gym space. We would potentially move clothesline out between pool and small shed and use that space for outdoor entertaining area. Pool is half inground with a deck around it. We have no undercover outdoor area. Appreciate all the replies and help.

What is your approximate budget? $50k or $500k? You can price your garage idea yourself, some shed suppliers have calculators on their website. Hopefully you can reuse the slab otherwise that adds significantly. For $50k you could add the dividing wall and do a new basic level kitchen and not much more. Do you know tradies, are you able to do DIY?

Great plan Oklouise. Got the column in island to support existing beam. Ensuite. Main bath with Separate toilet, separate laundry, bath, 5 bedrooms.

Your budget will dictate what you can do, is the flooring a concrete slab and which way is North. What age range are the kids. Have you considered a second story to work within your budget.

Siriuskey - I really like your idea and plan. Makes sense and would mean less changes internally and I do agree about the kids leaving etc as we are a blended family so kids could potentially not want to stay with us soon. Thanks for your help everyone it’s really appreciated.

Your renovation ideas are very achievable and well suited to a family of six. Converting the lounge into two bedrooms can work well if size and window requirements are met. Opening up the left side into a combined kitchen, dining, and living area is a great way to improve space and light.

Replacing the garage with a shed and rear awning will help connect indoor living to the yard and pool. Creating an ensuite for the main bedroom and a combined laundry/bathroom is also a smart use of space.
