Personally, I would do away with the peninsula and put a huge island that you could seat at least 6 at. Do you need the dining table? Where is the entry to the house? I think your sink and appliance layout is fine. But I am not an expert. Just giving opinion as to what I like.

I agree with Laurie. Your kitchen will be much more efficient if you build an island instead of the peninsula. Leave at least 36" between the counter and the island for the passageway. The rest of the design works just fine. The dishwasher should be next to the sink no matter where you put the sink. If you put the sink on the island make your island at least 42" wide or even wider.

Besides opening the space with an island... the appliance layout looks wrong and all jammed. Consider using the island for the cooktop or sink & putting the RFG next to the counter

Also looks like a table just behind the island... Do you need that much seating In such a small space and so close to each other?

You have a good nice project planned here, with your kitchen now a part of large living space. Here, though, are some cautions and suggestions.

Your extra-large peninisula counter and full window wall over the sink seem to be features that you like and want - but they also cause some problems with this plan.

If two people are ever in the kitchen, one will be trapped there. And even for one, the peninsula forces an irritating hike around it to the table for serving and clean-up. Table and array of counter stools are uncomfortably close together, creating congestion especially when occupied. And while your back wall may well contain a fridge, wall ovens, pantry and cook-top, it would just barely do so - and leave no other space at all for counter. This, together with your nice bank of windows on the outside wall leave no space at all for upper cabinet dish storage.

I agree with Laurie that an island here would be much preferable. I would put the sink and dishwasher on an island, with fewer stools, and some mid-height dish storage - letting gatherings of more than two or three enjoy the table in a conversational arrangement instead of facing away from the room in a row. I would also minimize the window array a bit, and extend the kitchen toward the dining table window a foot or so - and put the wall ovens at this end of the "L" - with no side wall at the left.

This would distribute your countertop space more happily among your work stations, allow for some upper cabinet storage, and make the kitchen feel more part of the nice big room, instead of separated from it by the peninsula.

Perhaps a careful in-person visit with a kitchen designer would be wise before you build this fun new addition. Good luck! Mark

If you plan to have two people in the kitchen working, the passage way should be 42" - minimum 36". I agree, the sink & dishwasher together, just making sure you can access it from the front and not just the side (allow room for door to be open before hitting the island or another cabinet - tripping hazard too).

The efficiency of the space will work well with an island. Look to expanding the island into an eating area/work surface. I like Kitchen Strand's appliance layout - keep a triangle - no more than 9 feet. If you need the table for dining, look to put in a banquet with the island. Might work out better for entertaining.

On the window side of the kitchen there is a load bearing wall that we have to work around, so we wont be extending the kitchen out in the direction of the living space any more than it currently is.
We have 2 young kids and neighbours kids that are over a lot so we won't be having the hobs on the main counter top for safety reasons. The kids will use the main counter as a breakfast bar and somewhere to sit while mum cooks.

Island is definitely the way to go

I agree. Doing a peninsula vs. island creates a Gally feel and limits flow. Also if you do away with the peninsula you can add a DW to the left of the sink.

The suggestion drawn up, certainly gives you fantastic amounts of workspace, so they have answered your brief well in this respect !
I think making the peninsular into an island - so DW could go next to sink is a good idea , if you are prepared to loose a little of that workspace ... Also if you are quite sociable, I would suggest the cooktop to be in the island ( To be able to chat to people as You cook ) but as you are quite happy with the cooktop on the wall - as you have said , then, I would suggest moving it down a little - to allow someone at the sink and someone else at the cook top - as it is it's a little tight in that area for two people in the kitchen as it stands ... Lastly, with a bar seating for four or more - it's easier for conversation - if you put people in a L shape or even U shape - just in a straight line is not conducive to conversation !! So I would suggest having the stools, that can be pushed under the counter top when not in use, in a configuration of two at the back one on the bottom left corner and one on the bottom right corner, these should be fine for children and casual dining ie breakfast, snacks etc

One last thing - if you don't want to make the peninsular into an island - then maybe consider moving the sink and dishwasher into the peninsular run, Cook top can stay where it is, if the sink is central on the peninsular it will be quick to clear plates from bar ! Will also give you a lovely natural light prep area in front of the windows this way !

I hope that hasn't given you too much food for thought !! It's a great space and there are so many options !! :-)

A concern we had about having the sink on the main counter is that if you don't do the dishes straight away you have pile up of dirty pots & pans displayed for everyone to see.

One way to eliminate that is to have a pony wall and your bar at the back of it - will also address your safely concern with the cooktop that way too ?! So opens your optional a bit more !
