Timber weatherboards in Resene Waterborne Woodsman CoolColour Pitch Black. Soffits, trims, shutters and brickwork in Resene CoolColour All Black
1. Embrace your dark side
There’s no denying it; black is back. The dramatic and moody hue is one of the biggest exterior key trends in 2021, cropping up in the interiors and exteriors of design-led homes just about everywhere you turn.
Black is said to go with everything, and it certainly rings true when it comes to homes. The versatile shade works equally well on classic and contemporary homes, and can be across everything from weatherboards, bricks and guttering to create a show-stopping facade that’s right on-trend.
If you’re planning on turning to the dark side, consider a smart finish such as Resene CoolColours, which reflects more heat than regular paint so the painted surface and the substrate stay cooler. The finish can be used on all sorts of surfaces, including weatherboards, concrete and windowsills.

Front door in Resene Turbo
2. Jazz up your front door
No time to paint the entire facade? Not a problem; you can easily repaint your front door in an afternoon – and give your home a brand new look in the process.
Bright and cheery pops of colour, such as Resene Turbo (bright yellow), Resene Ming (a warm blue-green), and Resene Fire (a burnt orange), are coming through in 2021 – all guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every time you approach your front door. Or, for a more understated look, consider a classic glossy black front door painted in Resene Nero or a wintry grey slate such as Resene Atomic, which sits beautifully alongside everything from red brick to grey weatherboards.
If you’ve got a bit of time left – and some spare paint in the tin – grab a couple of old planters and paint them in a harmonising or matching colour; fill them with greenery and position them in clusters around your front door. Creating a warm welcome has never been easier!

3. Show your wood some love
Worn or stained timber around your entryway can be a real eyesore, and creates an awful first impression.
Fortunately, all it takes is a couple of hours and a tin or two of wood stain or oil to rejuvenate the worn-out timber around your entry area. Use a product such as the Resene Woodsman range of wood stains and oils to spruce up your front decking, wooden steps, railings or a bench seat – just about everywhere your guests see when they first arrive at your home.
You can then use Resene Colorwood wood stains on the timber inside your home, such as your floorboards and kitchen cabinetry, to create a seamless look indoors and out.

4. Bring on the bling
Add wow factor to your exterior without a huge outlay by creating an eye-catching feature with Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. This easy-to-use finish can be used to add depth and charm to all manner of surfaces, including primed timber, concrete, fibre cement and plaster.
Use Resene Faux Rust Effect to jazz up a dull timber privacy screen, like the one pictured here; to add interest to a plain letterbox or some outdoor pots; or think bigger and apply it to one or two vertical sections of your facade to create a striking, textural feature.
Complete the look with a fashionable new front door handle, such as brass or oversized timber, some new deck lighting, a bench seat or a hanging chair on the verandah.

Resene Concrete Stain
5. Upgrade your driveway and pavers
Driveways and pavers are often overlooked, but they can really impact the look of your home’s facade. Rather than ripping up a dodgy-looking driveway or pavers, why not save time, money and hassle by repainting them instead?
Resene Blacktop Driveway Coating can make an old asphalt driveway look like new. Or, use Resene Walk-on Paving Paint to spruce up your steps, decking or porch. You can even specify it in a Resene CoolColour formula so that it doesn’t feel so hot underfoot on those warm summer days. Or pretty up the concrete pavers on your front path with a couple of coats of Resene Concrete Stain – it comes in a range of colours, giving you the option to refresh the colour of old, faded pavers or do something more decorative, like in the picture shown here.
And just like that, your boring facade is kicked to the kerb!
