Global Style: Bring the World Into Your Home With Colour
Transport yourself to distant lands and give your home an exciting new look with travel-inspired colour schemes

With overseas travel feeling like a memory (for now!), there’s no better time to bring that holiday feeling home to you. From evoking your favourite holiday memories to transporting yourself to those places you dream of exploring when freedoms allow, colour and pattern can do it all. “Decorating your home with travel-inspired decor is a great way to bring personality into your home,” says Rebecca Long, Resene colour consultant. “Whether you showcase items from your previous adventures or use decor to inspire future travels, it’s always inspiring.”
Here, colour experts at Resene share five of their favourite international design styles, and how to bring them into your abode.
Here, colour experts at Resene share five of their favourite international design styles, and how to bring them into your abode.
1. Wabi-sabi style
Evoke the reassuring calm of Japanese wabi sabi in your home with layers of soft, soothing greens across walls and furnishings.
Add subtle but compelling interest to your walls by colour blocking them in two tonal shades of silvery green, such as Resene Ravine and Resene Pumice.
Wabi-sabi style is all about celebrating imperfection; look to add in touches of weathered or recycled timber in furniture and decor items. Or embrace the tone-on-tone trend by painting furniture such as dressers, cabinets or side tables in soft, tonal greens, such as Resene Blue Smoke and Resene Pewter.
To make smaller, decorative pieces such as vases and bowls pop, paint them in slightly richer greens such as Resene Napa and Resene Yucca.
Layer it right: Tone-on-tone schemes are built on layering, so the more you add, the more the whole scheme will come together. The trick is to pick colours that complement each other, with enough variation to keep things from appearing homogenous.

2. Sweeping vistas
Bring the natural world right into the heart of your home with a mural wallpaper across a single wall that depicts magnificent natural scenery from a distant land.
Soak in the bath beside a gorgeous scarlet sunset, fall asleep beneath the mountains or work at your desk surrounded by the serene greens of the forest – the latest mural-style wallpapers make it all possible. Resene has a range of show-stopping murals and patterned wallpapers that work a treat in just about every room in the house.
Build a cohesive scheme: Pick up colours from your nature-inspired wallpaper in other elements in the room to give the scheme an intentional and considered feel. For example, with a wallpaper that features rich browns and terracottas, you might style it with exposed timber floors, natural fibre rugs, woven, natural blinds and rustic baskets.

3. Hygge happiness
The Scandinavian concept of ‘hygge’ is all about adding cosiness and comfort to your home – and it’s the perfect way to lift your spirits and make you fall back in love with your home.
For walls and floors, think calming tones of grey such as Resene Quarter Surrender and Resene Mid Greywash, and cosy, buff tones such as Resene Americano.
Combine these warming, nature-inspired hues with natural, touch-me fabrics – organic linen upholstery, chunky woollen blankets and sheepskin throws. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, fire it up on those cooler nights to amp up the cosiness factor.
Try something different: Create your own work of art by painting a large-scale artwork on the wall in a tonal shade of grey. Get it right first time by drawing it lightly on the wall in pencil first before you begin painting.

4. Spice trail
Turn up the heat in your home with a spicy colour palette. Evoking the exotic vibe of a Moroccan souk, tones of turmeric, cinnamon and terracotta are guaranteed to energise your interior and warm your soul.
“Colour preferences are very personal and can transport us around the world in an instant,” says Long. “A paint colour like Resene Sunbaked can take you to the depths of Morocco when paired with textured, turmeric-hued decor.”
Earthy, matt tones are key to making this look work. Try painting the walls in a matt finish such as Resene SpaceCoat Flat and the floor in Resene Colorwood Whitewash, finished with Resene Qristal ClearFloor to help protect the floor.
Think beyond walls: “A joyful colour such as Resene Just Dance will bring energy to the shelving in your pantry. Or up-cycle old furniture with Karen Walker Chalk Colour and embrace the raw and authentic feeling of nature,” says Long. “Alternatively, paint tired vinyl flooring with a travel-inspired pattern and seal it with Resene Uracryl Clear for protection.”

5. Wild at heart
Feeling nostalgic for your exotic globetrotting days? Bring a little decadence into your home with some maximalist styling.
Set the scene with a show-stopping, statement wallpaper or a mural featuring bold, botanical motifs or a wild jungle scene across a single wall – or all of them! Dial up the drama further with furniture in luxurious materials, such as a curvy, velvet-upholstered armchair or a brass and marble side table, that evoke thoughts of quirky boutique hotels.
Finish off the look with fun and whimsical touches such as a lamp base featuring a brass palm tree lamp and fringed detailing to furniture and cushions.
Bring in greenery: A medley of lush, indoor plants with leaves in different shapes and sizes will add to the exotic vibe.
