. The Hidden Clearing There is something exciting about unexpectedly coming across an open space in an otherwise densely planted garden. You can achieve this effect no matter how large or small your garden is. Even clearing a little spot behind a stand of tall grasses can create that sense of intrigue.
The 5,600-square-foot house mirrors the original concept drawing; it hovers above the rocky terrain and has glass walls that capture ocean views. "Drawings and models are tools to take abstract things in your mind and start to test them,” Pearson says. “You then simplify those and show them to the client. What people see from architects are the distilled, simplified versions of the design process."
This outdoor seating area in a Culver City, California, home has been brought to life with round lanterns in a variety of sizes. The white is fresh and modern, and it's no surprise that this space is a neighborhood gathering spot. I'm quite certain that the effect after dark isn't all that different from the bobbing fishing boat lights that first inspired Noguchi.
Pedals to turn the water on and off. Turning on the faucet with messy hands can make an even bigger mess. Plumbing pedals, like the ones in this kitchen, can help confine the mess. Just like at the doctor's office, you can use your foot to turn the sink on — hot water, cold water or both. Contact a local plumber to ask for an estimate — pedals can be added to existing sinks or new kitchen designs.
Oversize artwork defines the entryway. The art is a collection of 10 prints from Visionaire magazine's "Larger Than Life" issue. "Doing a monumental piece there was needed," Adamik says. "Anything smaller looked like a postage stamp." Wall and floor paint: White Heron, Benjamin Moore; runner: Pakistani Gabbeh, Weisshouse

AFTER: Bamboo floors, travertine backsplash tiles, amber pendant lights and an onyx waterfall countertop add organic warmth to the contemporary, clean-lined kitchen. For an even more modern touch, the cabinet grain runs horizontally. The Raabs balanced splurges and savings during the renovation. For example, they splurged on onyx and LEM Piston bar stools, and saved by using an induction range that did not require an expensive gas line. They were not happy with the way the slender hardware looked with the refrigerator's heft, so a helpful oven installer finagled two extra oven handles from GE to use for the refrigerator, which were a much better match.

fabulous! Wonder what they mean by metal decking? The interior doesn't disappoint: exposed steel, open spaces, metal decking and an architectural dialogue that fulfills the promise of the home's approach.
Love this door - and whole house for that matter. And here is the front door to the same home. The design in the door begins the rhythm of the space beyond. "This above all: To thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." — William Shakespeare, Hamlet Architecture should share the same qualities of authenticity that we value in people.
Sweeney Lake House, Minneapolis The facade of this home is striking and clean. Two materials, two windows with parallel geometry and an opening that is obviously the entrance. What would you imagine the interior to be, based on this facade? The answer largely determines the home's authenticity
From the roof, access to the house proper is via a stair that brings one to the outdoor space between the gabion walls seen earlier
Turning 180 degrees, we're now looking toward the entry (frosted-glass door on the right) and the open kitchen. The spiral stair heads to the roof and the home office on the second floor.
Another very interesting aspect of the retreat is how it is almost invisible on approach. Here is a view from the driveway, where some boulders keep cars off the roof of the gabion-covered volume. As the architects describe the approach: "The design grows from the site. When you arrive at the project, you are introduced to a 93-foot-long deck made of resilient ipe wood."
Views through a walkway can be amplified through the use of sliding doors, as in this mountain residence. The view from the walkway is phenomenal, so it's easy to see why patios are located on either side of the walkway.

Here is a walkway that does triple duty: It acts as a front door and a walkway connecting two sides of the house, and ...
by McKinney York Architects A walkway need not be only one story. This glass-enclosed walkway is two stories.
Custom design. Finally, creative architects who understand the local building and zoning codes can manipulate the shape and planning of new designs to max out usable space, views and curb appeal. This house, by Wayne L. Good, is sited on a compact, 60- by 116-foot south-facing lot with sweeping panoramic views of a bay. Total lot coverage was strictly limited by Chesapeake Bay Critical Area regulations, which led to a compact three-story plan with a garage tucked under the house.

Silmpicity vs Simpleness - Often architecture is formed by intersecting geometries, but seldom are the geometries orchestrated in such a lyrical way as the two gently sloping roofs of this home.

by Solar Innovations, Inc. Mulled Window System » Large windows and sliding glass doors do wonders to open up a ranch home. Simple frames like the ones shown here would fit in nicely.
But he was not content to continue with the complex diagonals of the Tod's building and the Serpentine Gallery. Meiso no Mori Municipal Funeral Hall (2006) is an undulating roofscape sheltering spaces enclosed with glass walls.
Cooktop. Although I love gas cooktops and think they are the best for cooking, when it comes to the easiest cooktop to clean nothing beats glass. You use a special cleaner to avoid scratching it, but there just isn't anything easier than this to wipe down.
Large-format tiles are another great flooring option. There are tiles as large as 24 inches by 48 inches. Glazed tiles are impervious to kitchen spills, and the minimal amount of grout lines keeps scrubbing to a minimum. Just as on your countertops, epoxy grout is a better choice here than traditional grout.
Wanting to maximize outdoor space, Collins avoided using columns on the deck. Instead he designed this steel beam system to support the cantilevered roof and allow windows to extend all the way to the ceiling

The parti pris, or big idea, could be about the house becoming transparent and framing views. A horizontally composed linear band draws the eye inward in this one, while a vertical totem arrests that movement. The architectural idea is to control sight lines and highlight the spectacular view.
