Fire pit
This particular firepit is natural stone including the cap as are most of our firepits. We also use cultured stone, textured concrete and natural rocks as well. The inside dimension is about 36" and the outside is about 60". The entire space including the placed rocks is about 15'x15'. The boulders and steps here are natural basalt, but the patio itself is made of pavers. Belgard makes them, they are called 'Mega Lafitt', here's a link to some info about them on Belgard's site: http://belgard.biz/collections.php?section=0&ind=3 One of the reasons that I love this paver is because it does look so natural!
So many questions on this question:)! - Where do you live? Is there going to be a lot of freezing and thawing that might result in water getting into the mortar and freezing, resulting in the stone popping off? - what did you build up the firepit with? Block, stone, brick, poured concrete? - how big is it and what type of look do do you want - formal, rustic, etc? - how close will the fire be to the stone? -The big thing is how close will the fire be to the stone and how hot will the stone get? Couple of homework questions!
Alderwood Landscape Architecture and Construction The fire pit in this photo is natural gas burning. In the case of this project, there is a small "catch basin" underneath the fire pit (several inches down) that collects drainage water, then the water is tight-lined underneath the patio and daylights out over the edge of the hill. On flat sites, we install a fairly substantial dry-well or sump underneath the fire pit that will collect water and slowly disperse it back into the soil. We also recommend keeping the fire pit covered unless it's in use. The height of our raised fire rings ranges from 18" - 22" above grade (standard seat-wall height). I'm attaching another photo of a similar fire ring for reference... Hope this helps! Alderwood Landscape Architecture and ConstructionHi Rosemary, the fire pit in this photo was built on-site with cmu blocks, then the project mason installed the natural stone veneer and cap. Unfortunately, it is a one-of-a-kind / built-in-place fire ring. I have seen some similar pre-built fire rings at a local paver & rock supplier (photo attached). You may be able to find something similar in your area... I would look around at landscape suppl...
I like how close the fire pit is to the rest of the patio. I think a common mistake is when the fire pit is placed far away from where everyone that isn't around the fire will be. Great design with the rocks as well. They look really great being mostly uncut. We use a UL listed, high BTU gas inserts with ceramic logs. Our natural stone custom firepits emit a great amount of heat with the strike of a match. . I know they are ceramic logs, and are specifically selected for natural gas's burning, the size of our fire ring, and for outdoor use.
See how the grass is worn around the pit; probably need something besides grass.
