We like subway tile similar to this for the upstairs shower. We like the cutout here but not this deep. Maybe 4-5 inches deep is ideal. Then we're thinking a different tile pattern like this on the inside wall of the cutout, the sides would be subway tile, and a thin border around the cutout.
