Off the blue living room is the gorgeous green downstairs bathroom, which has a fabulously boho feel. “It’s like a dramatic jewel box as you enter from the darker room outside,” Hamilton says. The sink was in the house when the owners moved in and fits the period vibe.Jinsique wallpaper by Kelsey Proud: Rockett St George; floor tiles: Grestec Tiles
While the homeowners didn’t care to have a huge master bathroom, they did want to incorporate an antique tub and a separate shower. The tub is across from the shower stall, just out of view. A repurposed sidelight from downstairs shares light between the vanity and the shower stall. The countertop is gray limestone; the hardware and faucets are unlacquered brass. One of Kretschmar’s favorite elements in this room is the knob on the shower door. “I couldn’t find shower door hardware that I liked. Most options were too modern looking for my aesthetic,” she says. As an alternative to what was available on the market, she used a vintage crystal doorknob. The contractor who oversaw the remodel, Nate Stockmeir, is also a creative craftsperson and an avid surfer. He drilled a hole in the glass and had the wetsuit-inspired idea to use neoprene to cushion the joint.
5. Moroccan: to create elegant curves. Not keen on straight, sharp lines? Try one of the Moroccan-style tiles that are on the market. The shapes created by a layout like this look gentle and elegant. As an easy transition from subway tiles, use them as a monochrome backsplash, as the homeowners have done here, or go for an all-white design to cover the walls. If you’re feeling brave, choose a rich color, such as cobalt blue or emerald green, to really make a statement.
7. Glass insert for tub-shower combos. Many still love their shower curtains, but partial glass dividers are coming on strong. Glass shower panels keep compact spaces airy and open, allowing a clear view to a statement shower tile or more natural light. See our guide on getting a glass insert
