This bathroom was designed and built by By Design Builders, which specified an LED drain light so the client can keep his or her bearings when the shower steams up. If you suffer from a vision impairment, consider one of these LED light kits and linear shower drains. Tip: Ensure that your bathroom is safely lit at night. Also consider installing nightlights to clearly illuminate the hallway between the bedroom and the bathroom.

The floor is matte and has texture, which prevents slipping, and the shower has a built-in floating bench. A porcelain floor tile made to look like Cipollino marble determined the room’s color palette.

If you're planning to have steam in your new shower, then look for shower fixtures that have steam vapor flashings included with the rough-in. This might be tough for some sales people to determine, so be prepared to look into it more after you leave a store.

Consider a shower transom in steam showers. If you study this photo closely you will see that this great shower is most likely a steam shower, due to the full glass surround. The transom above the door can be used to help dry the shower when the door is closed. Placing the fan close to the transom also helps draw air out of the shower when the door is closed.

Light is a perfect companion for steam. Adding a light source to a steam shower that can change color is a no-brainer in my book. Everyone has a favorite hue — I like these purple shades, but my wife likes blues.

Tip: When designing a steam shower, make sure the shower ceiling has a slight slope to it so water droplets roll to one side and down the shower wall, rather than onto your head.
