5 Stylish Apartments Under 550 Square Feet
Often called 'shoebox apartments', these homes are big on style and small-space-solutions
Inspired by Finca Vigía, Ernest Hemingway’s plantation-style home in Cuba, this bachelor pad does not shy from big tropical prints and darker colours. Twilhaar was even bold enough not to hack open the bedrooms, rather creating a Parisian-style enfilade layout where rooms flow into each other through non-existent doors.
One of the bedrooms was converted into the living area, as the main space from the entry was big enough only for the dining area. Twilhaar optimised floor area by carving out storage niches in the walls, and selecting compact and clean-lined furniture.

Customised furniture, such as the kitchen island with mobile storage unit, and built-ins were key to tackling the space constraints in this compact apartment. Lim also removed the bedroom wall and replaced it with sliding glass panel to allow for a visually more open plan.

Khu’s apartment may be small, but he didn’t allow that to limit him from cladding surfaces with luxurious textures and using statement-making furniture pieces. Small-space solutions include the reconfigured en suite bathroom that it creates a portal into the bedroom, and a galley kitchen that ‘disappears’ from view when not in use.

This one-bedroom condo had a tiny study room (it doesn’t even fit a bed) that the owner wanted to turn into a home gym. Designer Keith Ng turned to bespoke furniture that does double duty: the kitchen island is both bar and dining table, for example, and the platform bed is built on storage cabinets.

The configuration of this one-bedroom condo is similar to #2: A long, narrow space which you enter through the main door into the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, with a bedroom behind the living. Designer Liew Kok Fong similar opened up the bedroom by replacing its dividing wall with glass panels, creating a more spacious feel as it flows more easily into the living area. The small-space hero in this apartment is the custom-designed multi-use shelf that stretches the entire length of the unit, from the kitchen to the living area. Its multi-purpose kitchen island also acts as dining table, work area and space divider.
