Best of the Week: Kitchens With Wow Factor
These kitchens jumped off the screen and into our good books this week for their style, sass and ingenuity
Gazing at beautiful kitchens just never gets old. We’ve hand-picked some of the most beautiful kitchens from Australia and New Zealand that came to our attention over the past week on Houzz. Peruse your way through these outstanding designs if you dare, but be warned – your kitchen renovation plans may go into overdrive.
2. Location: St Kilda West, Victoria
Architect and designer: Ewert Leaf
Why we love it: Metallics can elevate any space to become elegant, and that’s certainly true in this house – the island makes this glamorous kitchen glow. Notice the mirrored splashback. It adds another reflective quality and makes the most of the already abundant natural light.

3. Location: Brisbane, Queensland
Architect: Paul Uhlmann Architects
Why we love it: Designed for a ‘man shed’ separate from the main house, the stonework and contrasting timber cabinetry in this kitchen is positively gorgeous. And don’t even get us started on the concrete benchtop with integrated sink.

4. Location: Auckland, NZ
Architect: Sonya Cotter
Why we love it: The stone island slab sets the tone for the rest of this kitchen, and the lantern-style pendants are gloriously oversized. And let’s face it, who can resist a black kitchen?

5. Location: Melbourne, Victoria
Architect: Architects EAT
Why we love it: The kitchen, dining and living areas are united through style, materials and tones. The design is bold and confident, but it also manages to feel relaxed and liveable – a combination we love.

6. Location: Sydney, NSW
Kitchen designer: Carrera By Design
Why we love it: It’s filled with natural light and the splashes of lush green make us feel happy to be alive. We clocked the triple skylight and pale floorboards – they make the kitchen feel all the more light and airy.

7. Location: Barwon Heads, Victoria
Architect: Bower Architecture
Why we love it: White kitchens will never go out of style, but this one is extra interesting for its timber-lined ceiling, atypical placement of subway tiles (vertical rather than horizontal) and decadent marble island. Plus, the stainless-steel benchtop adds a functional edge that makes it stop just short of looking too showroom pretty.

8. Location: Wellington, NZ
Architect: Click Architects
Why we love it: Sure, there’s the captivating architecture, but we could look at the detail in that kitchen island all day long. With a feature this eye-catching, the rest of the kitchen can focus on function, not flair.

9. Location: Melbourne, Victoria
Appliances: e&s
Why we love it: The kitchen itself is lovely, but it’s the pendants and stools that made us truly fall in love with this space. These were the touches that took it from fine to fabulous.

10. Location: Cairns, Queensland
Architect: Jesse Bennett Architect
Why we love it: Because when you live in the tropics, it’s worth celebrating. Big windows and no upper cabinets bring the outside in.

11. Location: Albert Park, Victoria
Architect/designer: Hindley & Co
Why we love it: It’s moody enough to be mysterious, but the clean lines of the white island balance out the space.

12. Location: Adelaide, SA
Kitchen designer: Alby Turner and Son
Why we love it: The flagstone floor and contrasting cabinets are out of the ordinary – we like that in a kitchen.

13. Location: Melbourne, Victoria
Kitchen designer: smarterBATHROOMS+
Why we love it: A kitchen doesn’t have to be big to be beautiful. Bespoke joinery brings an artisanal edge to this space, and the tapware and mirrored splashback add more than a hint of glamour – it’s the antiqued finish that does it.

Why we love it: We’ve become accustomed to seeing a trio of pendant lights suspended at regular intervals over the island bench. These pendants, however, have an earthy, homemade quality about them – in dramatic contrast to the sleek white kitchen – and we love that they’re hung at different heights.
