The Case for a Colour-Coded Home
Embrace your uptight personality and use colour as an organisational tool at home
Personality can play a large role in how we organise and decorate our homes. I believe in embracing our true self and creating a home that reflects our own unique style and flair. I am the first admit that I am a little bit uptight. I take life seriously and I am committed to getting the most out of every day, and that is why being organised is important to me. I admire those with a laid-back attitude, who don’t get flustered about organised chaos and untidy homes. If this is you, then stick to your guns and be you – unfortunately for me, however, my stress levels do not cope in environments like these. I want my home to run smoothly and efficiently, with little time wasted on searching for misplaced items. Combining this need to feel organised with my love of visual stimulation, I have found that using colour as an organisational tool in my home helps me to feel calm and in control. If this sounds like something that would suit your personality, then read on.
This is a controversial area to colour-code and I have often been told that my bookcase looks like a librarian’s nightmare, but I love my books sorted by colour.
While it does make finding a series of books, like Harry Potter, harder to locate on the shelf due to the different coloured spines, I still argue that this method of display works for me in a practical way.

Just the other day, a friend requested to borrow a particular book and I located it so quickly that even I was surprised.
In the bathroom
Do you have children or live with flatmates who steal your towels or leave them lying on the floor? A simple solution could be to allocate a different coloured towel to each person.
This is a great way to minimise the confusion over which towel belongs to whom, and is also handy for identifying the culprits who leave their towels lying on the ground.

The use of different coloured towels in this bathroom is visually stimulating and very practical. Not only does it inject a burst of colour into this space, but it ties in with the bright colours used in the exposed ducting.

Craft rooms
Craft rooms are probably one of the hardest areas to get organised and keep organised. With so many little bits and bobs in these spaces, it can be impossible to find a place for everything. Tidying these areas by colour can mean the difference between visual chaos and organised heaven.
This room full of yarn is a great example of organisation by colour. Imagine these cupboards if the yarn wasn’t sorted by colour. Having all the yarn grouped this way creates a room that is visually pleasing as well as practically organised. Now, where’s my pink yarn? Oh, there it is!

And the same theory can be applied to cotton and thread. Use your craft supplies as a feature and you will always be able to find what you need.
I adore the way these pretty papers have been organised by colour. Not only does it look great, but it is a practical way of organising craft items and makes locating a particular colour an easy task.

In the kitchen
There are so many ways that you can colour-code and organise your kitchen. Tupperware, utensils, platters, bowls and tea towels can all be sorted by colour and stored in appropriate sections.

Having all of your Tupperware or containers stored by colour not only makes it easier to find an item, but also helps when packing away cleaned containers. There is no confusion over where things belong.
In the wardrobe
I love having my clothes colour-coded. For those who have open closets or cupboards, it is an ideal method for keeping your clothes looking tidy.
Having your wardrobe organised by colour means that you can locate certain pieces with ease. It makes putting together an outfit a breeze!

This walk-in wardrobe is beautifully organised by object and colour. It is almost a work of art, but also a very practical method of organising clothes, shoes and hats. With such an extensive collection, it is important to be highly organised, as the search for a green top or a pair of blue shoes could take forever if this area wasn’t so immaculately sorted.

Colour-coded homes convey a sense of organisation, and while they aren’t for everyone, I believe that there are many who love the practicality that comes with being highly organised.
