A neutral background is a great place to start when you're after high impact color. And the Sullivan Work Island really defines the style of the casual kitchen. This Saugatuck home overlooking the Kalamazoo River was featured in Coastal Living's March 2015 Color Issue!

This kitchen got a complete face lift with the help of a coat of paint, new coutertops and backsplash tile. The original cabinets were a yellow oak circa 1980's and we chose a pale gray (Light French Gray by Sherwin Williams) to update and lighten the space. The blue, gray and tan tile backsplash adds a subtle pattern and color that compliments the cabinets. Woven wood shades and brass hardware add warmth and texture to the space. We incorporated greenery in the form of succulents and plants to liven up the place. Warm wood accents and counter stools also compliment the cool gray tones.

This shingle style cottage was a complete renovation, enhancing its already charming attributes with new, modern amenities. Renovations included enclosing an existing sunroom, new windows and new roof dormers to gain access to a walk-out roof deck.

Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   We went with a minimalist, clean, industrial look that feels light, bright and airy. The island is a dark charcoal with cool undertones that coordinates with the cabinetry and transom work in both the neighboring mudroom and breakfast area. White subway tile, quartz countertops, white enamel pendants and gold fixtures complete the update. The ends of the island are shiplap material that is also used on the fireplace in the next room. In the new mudroom, we used a fun porcelain tile on the floor to get a pop of pattern, and walnut accents add some warmth. Each child has their own cubby, and there is a spot for shoes below a long bench. Open shelving with spots for baskets provides additional storage for the room. GENEVA CABINET COMPANY, LLC., Lake Geneva, WI., -What better way to reflect your lake location than with a splash of blue. This kitchen pairs the bold Naval finish from Shiloh Cabinetry with a bright rim of Polar White Upper cabinets. All is balanced with the warmth of their Maple Gunstock finish on the wine/beverage bar and the subtle texture of Shiplap walls.

BEFORE: Empty, the sparkly-new kitchen came across a bit cold and under-construction. AFTER: A few home-y accessories warm up the space and help it look ready-to-go. Photography by eCreative
