Double Storey Modern Orangery, London

This contemporary glazed orangery extension is another successful collaboration we have undertaken, working alongside the highly respected London architects McDaniel Woolf. Effectively a double storey orangery, our design helped open up and extend the rear of this London terraced property, connecting upper and lower ground floors, as part of a whole house redevelopment. The basement was completely knocked through to create a fully open plan living area, with space for the customer’s young children to play, study and relax. The addition of a new staircase at the rear of the property connects the rear basement level to the garden and ground floor – for which, a modern kitchen extension now forms the central hub of the home. While the orangery has a solid flat roof to allow the installation of feature lighting and speakers, the nature of the double storey design means the new kitchen and living area benefits from abundant amounts of natural light throughout the day. To many people, an orangery is synonymous with a freestanding structure sat in the grounds of a large country home. Here at David Salisbury, however, we are equally adept at working within the confines of a London terraced property as we are a more rural setting. In this case, the orangery extension is key to the overall design and how the layout of the now fully refurbished home flows from one floor to the next. The result is an open plan, multi-layered living space that fulfils the demands of today’s modern living and has totally transformed this terraced London property.
