In this beautiful post-Civil war house, the original heart pine was taken from the floor and ceiling and is now a part of the cabinet doors, the cabinet drawer-fronts, and the crown molding of the kitchen.

Pineapple House designers created views to the home's stairs by widening the opening between the kitchen and informal dining room. They illuminate the area by adding side lights and a tall windowed modernly configured door across from the staircase. Galina Coada Photography

When this Georgian home underwent extensive renovation it was essential that the kitchen respected that, yet it also needed to have a contemporary twist due to the modern extension. The Hampton kitchen perfectly compliments the Georgian details in this property. Nick Smith

This solid home in Auckland’s St Mary’s Bay is one of the oldest in Auckland. It is said to have been built by a sea captain, constructed from the bricks he had brought from England as a ballast in his ship. Architect Malcolm Walker has extended the house and renovated the existing spaces to bring light and open informality into this heavy, enclosed historical residence. Photography: Conor Clarke.

Photo Credit: Andy Beasley An Industrial styled kitchen with a monochrome design and a splash of blue makes for a sophisticated collection of textures and materials in a space perfect for entertaining. The large format tiles on the floor make the space seem bigger. The feature angle poise lights from the ceiling above the island are an unusual way of using lighting to make a statement. Metro tile splashback is a classic look but still in keeping with the retro feel. Matt White kitchen with a contrast coloured island means the “work” side of the kitchen is hidden into the walls and the island is the thing to catch your eye first. Polished concrete floor from Lazenby’s adds to the desired industrial aesthetic and is a great way to bounce light into a basement space. Large black pendant lights compliment the black framing on the Clement windows Crittall Glazing beautifully. Its worth noting the way the light catches on the framing and casts shadows on the wall. – This is a great way of manipulating light to create a dynamic feature - no need for artwork!
