At Mackit we provide modern residential architecture services for discerning clients. James Mackie is an architectural designer, predominantly (but not exclusively) servicing the Wellington/Wairarapa region out of his busy Greytown design office. He founded his company Mackit Architecture in 2008, with a goal to fill the niche for bespoke modern homes that can be built efficiently and precisely. Being a registered designer with Architectural Designers New Zealand, a Registered Master Builder and a Licensed Building Practitioner in both design and carpentry, James has a unique edge when it comes to designing homes for discerning clients. Through the application of both his building and design knowledge, he can bridge the gap between complex high-level design and the practical reality of its construction. Inspired by the effect the built environment has on one’s self, James loves opportunities to enrich existence by creating high quality, beautifully designed spaces. Crucially, James’ incredible building knowledge also means that his plans are always expertly detailed and thought out – essentially he has already built the house in his head during the design process. Meticulous by nature, James keeps his hand in the construction industry through his own in-house projects, and finds the odd afternoon on the tools a great way to recharge and break through any creative blocks. This also enables him to establish and maintain extensive connections and an inside knowledge of the building industry. Clients find these connections hugely beneficial during the process of selecting a builder, which Mackit offers as part of their full construction observation services.

We met with James the very day we the received keys for our first home. Our dream was to create a "Scandinavian summer house" in the heart of Featherston! His first drawings absolutely floored us — he just understood our vision — and his ideas were absolutely spot on. Throughout the course of our renovation, we were consistently impressed with the level of creativity, care and professionalism James and the rest of the Mackit team approached our project. The renovation went off without a hitch and we can't remember once being stressed out as James was on top of everything — he's responsive, communicative and a total perfectionist. The result is a very high-quality dream house for us that is a pleasure to live in.

Project involved partial reconstruction and refurbishment of an old cottage (first half 2015). Mackit undertook all aspects of the project from initial concept (plans) right through to completion (ie; including partial demolition and reconstruction). The project could not be faulted and the outcome is excellent. We are very satisfied customers, so much so that we have engaged Mackit to design and build a new home for us.

We utilised James’ skills for both the design and construction of our renovation. The design phase took place over a protracted period (due to delays on our part) and James was always very patient; taking time to explore different options and give advice, whilst ensuring we had the best design that allowed us to meet our wish list, and accommodate our budget. As James completed all design work, we felt he was more invested in our project and well placed to wear two hats while the works were underway. Once the construction phase had started we found James and his team to be extremely hard-working with high standards of workmanship. In terms of project management, James was an excellent communicator, ensuring any conversations that took place were followed up with emails. He also provided adequate notice of any decisions that were required. We were impressed with his commitment and attention to detail; the finished product is a fantastic renovation that we are very happy with.

We chose James and his team at Mackit because we loved his contemporary modern design style. The team made the process very easy and their detailing, care and attention as both a master builders and architectural designers was exceptional. They were fabulous at listening to our brief, designing and then building our project. The project was delivered to deadline without any unexpected costs to us, something that we’d never experienced with previous design or building projects. The Mackit builders were unfailingly polite, communicated really well and were a pleasure to deal with, especially important with our young family living on-site during the build. The result is brilliant and much better than we envisaged. We frequently refer James and the team at Mackit to our friends and family and wouldn’t hesitate to ask him to design and build any of our future projects.
