Awkward living room ideas

Hi there, I have a very awkward living room, we're currently doing some small updates including lighting, painting and furniture, and looking to update this whole space , but it is very awkward. As you can see there's a hallway to the left, and an entry door to the right. Where I am standing is kind of just empty space where there are some sitting chairs. Does anyone have ideas on where best to put the tv, shape of new couches etc ?

Can you try the couches in a L shape with tv on wall where dog is sitting.

Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Would you cosider a quite contemporary fixture for the light in the center ceiling? Maybe a bit of red could go there!

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

I would move the two chairs against the wall with the table between for a "side" seating area... which can still see the t.v. (needs some baskets or something under that table... a trunk maybe...to bulk it up). Then make an L shape with the other couch/loveseat that you have. You also have great storage along the tv wall but it's kind of bland... punch it up with a color along the back of the bookcases or a funky wallpaper. Drapes for a punch of color with some other accessories and you'll have a gorgeous room. It also looks like you have an ottoman.... put a tray on top and use it as a coffe table for a while.

Despite previous opinions I have to say this - DON'T GET DOWN LIGHTS!!!! We had them in our previous home. They were constantly blowing no matter what kind of bulb used. The casings kept breaking. This meant we couldn't just change the bulb ourselves. It drove me mental. They spotlight certain parts of a room instead of lighting the whole room so when one of our main "culprits" kept blowing in the kitchen, I had no lighting above that bench until we could get an electrician in. More than one electrician told us they are a serious fire hazard. I will never have them again!

Maybe have the tv on the left, hallway wall. Then a modular sofa away from the right hand wall. A buffet for storage into the alcove where the tv currently is. Leaving enough space to enter/exit through external door and walk completely around the sofa.

Put your painting on window wall, centre your tv either on a stand or mount on wall, add a large rug , one or two sofas, a sectional with a chaise, or alternatively mount tv on window wall

Sounds like a couple of different ideas, @Kate you think I should put the TV behind Couch#2 and then put an L shape couch where couch #1 is?

Is this room used occasionally by people or is it your main tv viewing room? What are the measurements from hallway wall to external wall? What are the measurements from external window along that wall to the corner of the alcove? How wide is the alcove? Is the front window to the ground or say 1000mm above floor level?

@dreamer Yes it is the main room at the front of the house, used alot. Its only a small cottage type house so this is the only living area.

Hallway wall to external : 4.5m

External sliding door to corner: 2.5

Alcove width : 3

Window to the side is a sliding door so right to the ground.

Okay, so what is the green line at the bottom of your plan? I assumed that was a window? That’s what I was asking about regarding it’s measurements.
