MeganJohnson42, did you paint the fireplace surround or was it already like that? Similarly, did you paint the walls or were they already like that? Also, doI see a ceiling beam up there or is that a shadow from something else? The least expensive, semi-permanent thing you can do to spruce up a space is offer up some color. You've got a very neutral toned room there and I wouldn't tell you to go out and buy new furniture if what you have works. That's too wasteful and not everyone can buy new furniture to go with their new decor every time they move. So, a few cans of good quality paint of a well chosen color will definitely do the trick. If you want to chat colors, that's a good idea. Besides, the worst thing that happens is you hate it and have to paint it over again. That's a couple hundred dollars. Way cheaper than a new sofa. So, talk colors.

Don't put the coffee table in the middle of the floor, No one can reach it from either side. Move closer to sofa. Arrange chairs so all front legs are on rug. Looks pretty good you did all right. Maybe some art on the walls to bring in some color. Try kicking it up a notch with another color. It is pretty blah. Maybe some tall vases on the hearth in orange or red. A couple of pillows and take off the plain ones.

I would move floor lamp to end of sofa arm that is by FP.

Our team loves what you've done so far! You can pull more of the white and black elements from the fireplace and hardware with some printed throw pillows or blankets. We see multiple lamps - perhaps installing a bright chandelier with dimmer, will brighten up the room? Not sure if it's just the image but the room seems dark even with the two windows. You could pull that beautiful blue color with maybe some coffee table accents? Blue vase with white flowers, tray of candles, books, etc. Good luck with your project!!

All these opinions are more or less subjective comments driven by individual taste. The most important first question is: how do you use this room? How you use it, who uses it, formal or casual, alone or for entertaining others, watching tv, etc etc will dictate a whole lot about how to set up the room. The room has to work for the purposes for which it is intended, not some abstract concept of how it "should" be used. Start there.

Hang something like this over back of chairs.

They are from Pier 1. Visit a local store or go online. They have all kinds of art and accessories to complete your room. Great pillows also.

Ok that makes sense gray blue tones would look great on the walls with a splash of a yellow nothing extremely bright. Definitely bring the furniture in closer with maybe a couple of end tables and lamps that fit. Art work for the wall behind the chairs possible rectangular mirror in the middle of the pictures. Do away with the floor lamp install can lighting with a dimmer. In front of the windows a bench that you could sit on with shelves under it. for the other window I know nearly natural has some awesome faux plants of all kinds that would look great by the window.

agree with alpha. gray/blue tones with just the right yellow (yellow is a very tricky color so be careful) is a beautiful combo--timeless, elegant yet fun and a trifle whimsical.

I thought that the candleholders for FP was a cute idea and found this on overstock.com that might work also ITEM# 1136428 and their 10 lite one ITEM# 13989623. I'm not sure about the tealights but think that the flameless candles (especially with a remote) with look great in FP.

Suggestion - I would not paint the walls at this point - but add color balance in other ways. For example, add a smaller rug over the current one you have and place it on a diagonal. That can be your starting point to building the rest of the color. Part of the problem is that you have nothing to transition your eye from the dark coffee table and chairs, to the lighter areas - you have dark on one side, light on the other. So once you have the rug down, move to balancing it out by adding art on the walls. The art (and/or pillows and a throw), or photo behind the couch, should balance the intensity of the brown chairs, either with color, or size. I would suggest a grouping of things - you seem to have a vintage farmhouse look going that would be very pretty by layering different pieces in distressed whites, with your watery/tiffany blues as accent. I would add the "bright color" in a spring leaf green for the spring summer months. For the fall, you can bring in more browns and patterns. If you can, I would add a mantle - a piece of wood on your fireplace , and then accent it with a large mirror with a natural distress frame. Good luck with your choices!

I see you like blue..I painted my living room Pale Smoke by Benjamin Moore.It's a lovely shade of blue and gray. I think it would go very well with your furniture. I would replace the drapes with an off white linen or similar fabric...Your whole furniture placement looks nice but move everything a little closer in to make the coffee table closer and to anchor your furniture on your rug. I would take your items off the mantel and put a large colorful piece of art that you can either hang above the mantel or if very large can rest and lean on the mantel. Pick one large decorative item like a vase for the left side and balance the other side with a grouping where at least one item is in the size range in height of the other side..It doesn't have to be the same exact height....You can get there by putting some books on their sides with a clock resting on top next to a chunky candlestick..If you do a search for mantels you'll get some great ideas. You have a pretty room..Have fun..
