Stairs to upstairs flat need inspiration

I have an internal dog-leg stairway up to my 1980's first floor flat. It is narrow but very tall, especially on the half-landing, and there is no external light except from downstairs front door. No other additional daylight is feasible/permissable. I need decorating ideas to break up the expanse but the walls must be covered in a robust material as everyone brushes the walls in passing. I like the idea of having different materials/paint/colour for top and bottom of walls. The carpet is a light brown colour.

You could add a dado rail and put it a little higher than normal.
    Paint above and below.
The benefit of the dado is that when you need to repaint because of scuff marks you need only paint the easier lower half as this is where the marks will inevitably be.
Ps a cream cleaner will get rid of lots of marks on wipeable paints

    Hello Diane,

You mention no other additional daylight is feasible/permissible. May I ask why that is?
