Living Room furniture placement - need help
I am really struggling with the furniture placement of this living room. I got some help from a designer (option 1), but I don't like the sofa placed in front of the window and we would have to get a new (very large) coffee table to make this work.
Here are two photos of the space as it is currently - very bare. The plan is to paint the walls white and white wash the fireplace brick. We'll need to add artwork, window treatments and I have 2 leather arm chairs that we can add to the space. I'm also not sure what to do with the track lighting, but I thought I would figure that out after I determine the furniture placement. Also, don't pay attention to the view of the pink kitchen through the doorway in the 2nd photo, the kitchen will be remodeled.
The majority of the time the room will need to seat 4 to 6 people, but I'd like to be able to seat 8 people by pulling up an extra chair or so. I'd like the fireplace to be the focal point more so than the TV. But it would be good to have at least 2 comfortable spots to watch the occasional movie from. We won't be watching much TV and it's just the two of us, though we do plan to entertain quite a bit.

Comments (3)What a fun space! Love the pillows...I agree with above, lower all the frames, but not so low little ones can reach. The art should fall at eye level about 5'4" for walls and for behind the sofa not more than 12" above it. Then keep the width about 5" inside the sofa length on each side. Your frames are small so you need the close together for impact. Comments (4)Thank you for ideas the room is little dark in day but I love the night effect, we are repainting so could look at half the tone of current colour, the chairs I have in the room are silver. The photo does not reflect this, wonder if gold would be odd the stone sofa has metal legs, the house is 1970 ContempOry but I love to mix old and new, and wanting elegant French look, what type of comfy chairs should I get to match sofa and where would they best fit, do you think the armoire go next to fire.? with our old settee should I keep this single chair but cover it? I wonder if it too bulky? Also the leather chair is brown should I keep this in the room or not. the mirror above chairs is silver and gold frame should I shift it /paint it /leave it and add tall lamp in this ares to make reading corner, and can pull in chairs when have guests? Comments (13)There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Comments (5)A few simple steps can give your room a lot more vibe! Try pairing the drapes with sheer curtains, that will give the window more depth. The tv wall could be your accent wall, a dark blue would actually work very well. If the TV has backing, I would hang it on the wall, a few inches above the furniture piece. The two frames above the white dresser should go below the wall clock. Instead, a large art piece (about the length of the dresser) would complement that wall much better. I would also replace the coffee table with a rectangular, heavier glass and metal table, placed in the center. Also pillows. Pick up colors from your art work and the accent wall and use those to find pillows to decorate your sofas. Hope this inspires :-)...See Moreediblekitchen

7 years agoYes, another option is to only use one of my leather chairs and have an "everyday" arrangement and then pull up extra seating when necessary. So, this would seat 4-5. And then I'd pull up the extra rattan chair and the two ottomans to seat 8.
Or does it seem unbalanced having the larger leather chair and the smaller rattan chair flanking the fireplace?
