Before & After Kitchen in Washington, DC

Design
by #SarahKahnTurner4JenniferGilmer in Washington, DC.

The
clients were downsizing from a large gourmet suburban kitchen to a smaller
footprint but did not want to compromise on storage. Working with architect
Christian Zapatka, AIA, we ripped out the brick pizza oven (left) and the
barreled ceiling to open the space to its full potential. Careful consideration
was given to cabinet inserts. We incorporated tray bases, drawer dividers,
spice and cutlery inserts and cabinets that go as close to the ceiling as
functional. Every cabinet had a function but the flexibility to be
interchanged. We increased the countertop space on both sides of the sink by
moving the cooktop to the island. Using stainless steel doors on the cabinets
above the fridge and oven columns, we created additional visual height and
balance. This helps anchor the space between, allowing for floating shelves to
display an international collection of accessories. The clients, who travel
extensively, collect vintage paper and are fascinated by its intricate
patterns. The floating shelves gave us an opportunity to highlight the
beautiful handmade tile backsplash the client selected that is similar to the
patterns they love in their hand-marbled paper collection.

Thanks everyone for all these great comments on our Georgetown townhouse kitchen renovation. The clients love their new entertaining space. WIth lots of new square footage in the kitchen after removing the brick pizza oven, there is great traffic flow out to the new, level back patio. Removing the steps leading up to the patio saved even more floor space. Now, the large French doors open up right onto the patio and blend with the kitchen to invite al fresco dining.

This kitchen renovation was part of a whole house remodel of a 1900-era home that was opened up to maximize natural light and complement the home's high ceilings. We worked with Christian Zapatka, AIA, on this project.

When the clients selected the unique backsplash tile, we were inspired to complement it with our color selection for the island cabinetry. There is plenty of room around the island to allow for lots of guests to be in the kitchen and watch the action during a party.
