Dining room finishing

appreciate suggestions to make the dining room more "alive". The kitchen is white, white ceiling and beige (caraway colour) walls, Table has family history that I want to keep but chairs recovered differently and maybe a couple more that are different? (I just trying the cane ones so could use what we have here, what do you think)The console is glass and metal, does it work , A chandelier will be too low and I change the table position a lot, Do I need a rug separating maybe sisal? the 2 chairs by window ? Should they go ? I have a round glass table that matches the chairs should we use that ? Is it our proportions that is wrong ? Flooring is dark wood look planking,

Thankyou again We do have children but grown up and leaving home in the nearish future so we are wanting to decorate the space for us now. I have a feel for a direction and some inspiration rumblings beginning,

Beautiful table. I don't particularly like the metal/cane chairs. Too 'light' in appearance.
Do you use the chairs by the window? I think they are too close to the table and they are too big in comparison. Could be the angle of the photos though, may look different in real life.

I don't think your ceiling is too low to hang a pendant above the table. How do you change the table position? If you only turn it around, you can still keep it centered under a light. If you move it to the wall it's another story of course.

The two paintings above the console should be hung lower and I prefer them on one level. You can add table lamps on the console and a floor lamp in the corner between the windows. If you use the two chairs, I would add a table in between and angle the chairs a bit.

I'll see if I can find you other dining chair options.

New Zealand! You live in paradise! Porch paint is specially made paint for wooden porches or decks. Its not a stain but an actual hard wearing & weather resistant paint that allows the wood texture to show through. Its safe for indoor or outdoor use. It is self priming & self sealing. I have used porch paint for wood paneling & kitchen cabinets & when remodeling a staircase formerly covered with carpet. It comes oil based or water based acrylic. I prefer oil based for a glossy easy to clean finish for a wooden table top. You may check your local home improvement/hardware store or paint store. I use Glidden Porch Paint. Takes me only 2 coats for white & the oil based goes on easily with a roller. Dries quickly too. Good luck!

Hi Jennifer K, thanks for your comments. The photos you have posted are really lovely but not really suited to our environment and house, which I know is impossible to tell from one photo. We have built a modern farmhouse on 10 acres. That room looks out to beautiful green countryside and the river below. The dining room is a bit of a feature and is completely different to the rest of our relaxed lodgey style house but I don't want it to be too modern, if that makes sense. The photos have given me a few ideas so thank you so much for your help!

I think, like you said, due to the fact that there's a larger space when it comes to the hotel lobbies is the reason as to why it works. I think that no matter what you put on the walls (whether it be concrete or marble) will result in tiles not working out. The industrial look tends to be exposed brickwork anyway, or cream or white colours so maybe that's an option you could look into. What did you end up doing?

I agree about the two chairs they are pulled out in summer onto the deck and I have to admit they have just stayed there, some seating would be ideal and the idea of lamp and table a good option, I move the table vertical by window in summer often, re dining chairs have been looking around at the modern option interested to see you suggested this it gives me confidence to look more seriously, thank you for your pictures and suggestions

I love the chairs by the window and I know I would have my coffee there every morning! I would love the table between them to put my cup on. I know you said you move the table a lot, and I am wondering if there is just more room if you turn it and have it go the long way in to the room. Do you have kids? I might leave a rug out as that area is so much easier to clean after kids eat and your floor is beautiful!!! If you put the glass table with the chairs, I think the glass console has a reason in the room. I would even move the two prints lower and hang at the same height. Put a few more dashes of color in the room to tie the end chairs in.

Yeah... I thought the modern options would go nicely with your kitchen. And I love the combination of an old wooden table with modern chairs.
