Dining room help please ...
Hi, We have recently built our house. I am thrilled with the wallpaper (black background with gold), the curtains (medium grey linen), lighting (black linen), chairs (black linen) and wooden floors in the dining room. I am not so sure about the furniture colors. The wall opposite the main , long wall is all glass. So no issues with natural light. Table: I have bought a table that I think is perfect for the room. My idea is to have it painted black (not sure if it should be semi-gloss or matte though). Sideboard/buffet: I have also been thinking about a large sideboard/buffet painted silver, or possibly black to go with the table? Will it be too dark though?? Mirror: Large black or silver framed mirror above the buffet? I don't know if the ideas above are good ideas or not but I would love to know what you think. Thanks in advance! :-)

Comments (13)Try this. Hang the television to the right of the wood stove on the wall opposite the french doors. Use the wall with the high windows for a looong sofa and add two chairs across / angled slightly - low back so you can look over one to television. use console / sofa table on entry /bed door wall just past where entry door opens so you have a lay down surface. Forget glass, it isn't for this era and won't make it feel bigger. Paint ALL french doors inside and out and small windows and entry door same color and trim same color too. Try a charcoal rather than a black - something in the blue-green-gray shades like new providence navy. do all the walls in kitchen and living in a warm white - this tone has the wood as an undertone - http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/woodash then, for the cabinets . . do a bungalow thing and go deeper on the cabinets to a classic drabware tone - with the wood walls and floors / try bm bracken biscuit http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/brackenbiscuit these will all go together like gangbusters, keep it light and bright but interesting and work with a new blue green gray back door in a tone like bm beach glass http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/beachglass templeton gray as a counterpoint on some craigslist piece of furniture . . add warm undertone tan and oatmeal nubby tweed upholstery to start . . the teal navy gray will work with the black iron stove and accents without going black. start keeping the left door to the kitchen closed and get a door stop to hold the other one open permanently . . this will work because you need a little more wall to make the tv work well - in the kitchen, pull your table away from the wall just a tad - consider a padded bench on the wall to provide a kind of sitting space in there and put the chairs across - if you shift your television to the wall (high enough the heat is not an issue , you can still have big speakers work well - and remote the media equipment - run the wire and patch the holes. Comments (5)To a fair degree , its not too bad , coming off the dining , but conversely I understand why its not ideal . As the plan seems to say 'final' , I assume it is locked in and you definitely don't want to move any external walls . The only other option I can see would be to move the door to Bed 2 to the 'right' on your plan ( to the inner end of the Bed 2 WR ) , and have the door to the Master entering from this longer hallway into what is now the WIR . If you went down that route , you could either rearrange the ensuite and WIR and have a hallway , but the other option would be maybe 4 or even 6 doors and a non-walk-in robe along the wall that currently has door . Thinking , you could even walk through the WIR I guess , but that would be at the bottom of my preferences ....See More

Don't think the silver metallic paint is a good direction. Consider mirror or brass finishes.
Could likely get a sideboard in black with gold painted flowers.

8 years agoI do like the BM Mythic, it is a darker gray and will look good with chairs. It has no silver so you can use gold accents.
A buffet that is gold and mirrored or a large piece of art.

8 years agoChanging the colour won't make your farmhouse table go any better with your very formal room. In fact, the gold colour of the wood is probably the best you could have with this table in this room. I'd get a new table in a formal style that suits the room.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI like the wood, which breaks up the black and gives more depth to the room - maybe live with it for a bit and then decide, as I think it also tones down formality, which your room could heads towards (maybe you want that?). With gold in the wallpaper, I think brass is the way to go with your accessories and a large brass sculpture on the table or side board would really compliment. To achieve a more informal dining space, I would use a black side board that is casual to suit your table and chair legs but still feels modern. Look for impactful art that has some gold with a gold frame or a mirror that has a unique design. I would be keeping it towards a more casual and inviting feeling.

8 years agoHmm... well if the idea is to do a sort of "black tie farmhouse" mix, I think you'll need to bring a little more farmhouse in to keep the table company. And as I said, the warm golden wood of the table plays well with your wallpaper and the legs of your chairs. So I'd leave the table be. I think if you paint it grey or black the poor table will look as uncomfortable as a farmer in his wedding/funeral suit. ;)
Perhaps a sideboard that's a bit farmhouse might help?
