Dining room help please ...
Hi, We have recently built our house. I am thrilled with the wallpaper (black background with gold), the curtains (medium grey linen), lighting (black linen), chairs (black linen) and wooden floors in the dining room. I am not so sure about the furniture colors. The wall opposite the main , long wall is all glass. So no issues with natural light. Table: I have bought a table that I think is perfect for the room. My idea is to have it painted black (not sure if it should be semi-gloss or matte though). Sideboard/buffet: I have also been thinking about a large sideboard/buffet painted silver, or possibly black to go with the table? Will it be too dark though?? Mirror: Large black or silver framed mirror above the buffet? I don't know if the ideas above are good ideas or not but I would love to know what you think. Thanks in advance! :-)

Comments (5)For the fireplace inserts go ahead and do the green order a second set of panels that you store that are more neutral. In 10 years or five years you may not like the green anymore. It's possible you won't have access to different colored panels at that time. As for the color I like the ideas of going into those silvers it would coordinate very well with your blue couch and it will pull the blues out of the curtain panels. For the wall coloring use the warm golden color in the drape. There is one piece of the flower that has this color and it will balance the weight of a dark couch. If your room is small don't go too dark in this color. Comments (13)There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Comments (5)To a fair degree , its not too bad , coming off the dining , but conversely I understand why its not ideal . As the plan seems to say 'final' , I assume it is locked in and you definitely don't want to move any external walls . The only other option I can see would be to move the door to Bed 2 to the 'right' on your plan ( to the inner end of the Bed 2 WR ) , and have the door to the Master entering from this longer hallway into what is now the WIR . If you went down that route , you could either rearrange the ensuite and WIR and have a hallway , but the other option would be maybe 4 or even 6 doors and a non-walk-in robe along the wall that currently has door . Thinking , you could even walk through the WIR I guess , but that would be at the bottom of my preferences ....See More

You like the radical, I like that. I firmly believe art needs to accept a room.With that in mind a work that will do wonders in your dining room...a sample of mine on Houzz.

Don't think the silver metallic paint is a good direction. Consider mirror or brass finishes.
Could likely get a sideboard in black with gold painted flowers.
10 years agoI do like the BM Mythic, it is a darker gray and will look good with chairs. It has no silver so you can use gold accents.
A buffet that is gold and mirrored or a large piece of art.
10 years agoChanging the colour won't make your farmhouse table go any better with your very formal room. In fact, the gold colour of the wood is probably the best you could have with this table in this room. I'd get a new table in a formal style that suits the room.

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoI like the wood, which breaks up the black and gives more depth to the room - maybe live with it for a bit and then decide, as I think it also tones down formality, which your room could heads towards (maybe you want that?). With gold in the wallpaper, I think brass is the way to go with your accessories and a large brass sculpture on the table or side board would really compliment. To achieve a more informal dining space, I would use a black side board that is casual to suit your table and chair legs but still feels modern. Look for impactful art that has some gold with a gold frame or a mirror that has a unique design. I would be keeping it towards a more casual and inviting feeling.

Hmm... well if the idea is to do a sort of "black tie farmhouse" mix, I think you'll need to bring a little more farmhouse in to keep the table company. And as I said, the warm golden wood of the table plays well with your wallpaper and the legs of your chairs. So I'd leave the table be. I think if you paint it grey or black the poor table will look as uncomfortable as a farmer in his wedding/funeral suit. ;)
Perhaps a sideboard that's a bit farmhouse might help?
