I think grey or silver for table and buffet are a better option.

Are you sure you want to paint the table black? It will definitely be a very dark dining room. Silver for the table and sideboard would be the way to go, especially if they were painted with metallic paint.

I'm with pure, go for a gray on the table & paint the chair legs to match.

If you paint the table black the room will be dark and everything will blend together. It would be a good idea to break up all the black with a light are rug. What the dimensions of your room and table?

I do like the BM Mythic, it is a darker gray and will look good with chairs. It has no silver so you can use gold accents.

A buffet that is gold and mirrored or a large piece of art.

Changing the colour won't make your farmhouse table go any better with your very formal room. In fact, the gold colour of the wood is probably the best you could have with this table in this room. I'd get a new table in a formal style that suits the room.

I like the wood, which breaks up the black and gives more depth to the room - maybe live with it for a bit and then decide, as I think it also tones down formality, which your room could heads towards (maybe you want that?). With gold in the wallpaper, I think brass is the way to go with your accessories and a large brass sculpture on the table or side board would really compliment. To achieve a more informal dining space, I would use a black side board that is casual to suit your table and chair legs but still feels modern. Look for impactful art that has some gold with a gold frame or a mirror that has a unique design. I would be keeping it towards a more casual and inviting feeling.

Hi Jennifer K, thanks for your comments. The photos you have posted are really lovely but not really suited to our environment and house, which I know is impossible to tell from one photo. We have built a modern farmhouse on 10 acres. That room looks out to beautiful green countryside and the river below. The dining room is a bit of a feature and is completely different to the rest of our relaxed lodgey style house but I don't want it to be too modern, if that makes sense.

The photos have given me a few ideas so thank you so much for your help!

The room measurements are 18 feet x 15 feet, and there is a 13 foot glass slider on one wall (opposite the wall where the buffet would go).

The table is 8 feet long and 3.6 feet wide.

Try staining the table a darker color, like a medium tone walnut. I wouldn't paint it.

Hmm... well if the idea is to do a sort of "black tie farmhouse" mix, I think you'll need to bring a little more farmhouse in to keep the table company. And as I said, the warm golden wood of the table plays well with your wallpaper and the legs of your chairs. So I'd leave the table be. I think if you paint it grey or black the poor table will look as uncomfortable as a farmer in his wedding/funeral suit. ;)

Perhaps a sideboard that's a bit farmhouse might help?

I agree you need to follow through with the lighter rustic wood...lighting and art is what will really finish off your space. I absolutely love the light wood with the dark walls..Fabulous!

i love the lighting...hard to see but do you have two black drum shades over table? They may be to high...shouldn't be much higher than around 32" from top of table to bottom of fixture.

try painting the chair legs black and have a white table (with white legs), and white covers on the lights. Go for contrast rather then blending.

oh, if you do put in a buffet - make it white and keep the covers on the lights black
