I misread your post. Hopefully Beth will weigh in because she always has some good tile options/advice. I think the black and white looks cool in the rendering. Maybe it needs to be more charcoal and white. Good luck!

I think you need to play around with pattern on this... Are you thinking all the stars in blue and the crosses in white or vice versa? Or stripes of color or what?

These are the sample we did with the black and white (please excuse the mess) and it felt kind of cold and not really congruent with the rest of our house. I absolutely loved it in theory but couldn’t figure out how to make the black and white work. I’m sure someone with better design sense could though.

I don't see how this tile or the colors will work successfully with a Spanish style So.Cal home.

Wow, I love the stars and cross tiles. I am totally not an expert or even good at this stuff, but my initial gut was that they’d look best all in blue. I’d love to see a photo of the finished product!

Your rendering looks like wood tile on the bathroom floor... I thought this tile (blue/white) was for the floor in the shower ONLY. Is that not correct? If it's just the shower floor, I think the black and white you have with no solid black is perfect with white walls. Can you clarify where you need the tile?

Mnmamax3, the tile will be for the entire bathroom floor and shower floor. We want to keep it the same in both areas because the bathroom is so small. Thank you for all your help!

Ahhh, now I understand. I agree with the others and my original post that you should choose either all blue or all white if you do the stars/crosses. Is there any pictures online of the stars/crosses all grouted up (either mixed or solid color)? That might help you decide - right now you are looking at just a few tiles.

I think the all black/white option would be cool too, similar to the options Beverly posted. Why did you think it wouldn't work?

I think everyone is right, one color is the way to go. The black and white seemed a little stark when I tried it out in the space. I’m hoping to find a tile that goes well with the other bathroom in the house. This is our other bathroom below. I was originally going to do the same design as the other bathroom, just in different colors and smaller (4x4 field tiles with a Malibu tile insert) but I got really overwhelmed with the choices and thought the star and cross would bring a little spanish colonial character but wouldn’t be as difficult to figure out. As you can see, I’m a little lost and have to make a decision soon.

You will never tire of black and white ...and "stark " is good in those rooms. Although I think you should replace the word stark with stylish /clean/modern/ good looks . Put a picture or photos on the walls to bring in your sense of warmth and you will have a great bathroom.

Black and white is classic and I have no idea why that would not work in your home I don’t however like the pattered tile in the middle of the black ones at all. Beverly posted some awesome choices and IMO all better than the baby blue or white in the stars and crosses.

This is the combo I had posted previously and pretty much everyone told me that it was wrong for a Spanish house and looked too trendy, albeit some in kinder ways than others. The pictures Beverley posted, remind me of what I had previously posted, but because I’m not good at design maybe I’m way off.

What do YOU like? The problem with asking everyone, is everyone has a different opinion! :) I would do the penny tile in the shower and then choose a pattern for the WHOLE rest of the floor. That way if you tire of the pattern, it's just replacing a few feet of floor tile (generally an easy job). My choice would be the bottom one because it's straight black and white. You could bring in any accents with that for walls, etc.

Your other bathroom is a completely different color palette, though that mosaic tile inset might work on the floor with solid white walls. Choose a color in the tiles for pennies on the shower floor (turquoise or rust). I do feel like the black and white is more classic and updated but if you are trying to bring some cohesiveness that's how you could. Is the rest of your home more black and white or the peachy tones?

That deep green looks similar to the color in the other bathroom. Will that give you the tie-in you are looking for? It would be stunning!

allonsy - tile choices can be very overwhelming and it is a big investment, I totally understand your apprehension. We recently built a house and all the decisions were fatiguing. Good news for you is that your existing bath is charming and warm and appropriate, so you clearly have a good eye and you CAN do this. Don't lose heart.

I think your original idea of using 4x4 tiles and an decorative tile accent was a great one. What is your favorite color? Personally I love those deep greens and blues you just posted. So much more life that the pastel blue.

Here are some bathrooms in the style you originally thought of.

Localeater - I totally agree with the sentiments... you know something is off with the black and white plan. That said, I would not do a bunch of busy accent like the example pictures above. Choose the pretty turquoise for the floor, white subway for the shower walls and then accent wall behind you mirror in the same colorful tile from your other bathroom (below). Will still look updated and modern but with a nod to the colors that fit your home.
