Are these suckers?

I planted a jacaranda and magnolia about 6 months ago. I'm in Sydney so both have been under some stress with the heat and drought (upper leaves getting burnt on hot days etc).

In the last couple of weeks we've had a lot of rain, and since then I've noticed both plants have a lot of new growth near the ground. Is this growth an example of suckers?

The new branches from the magnolia are coming out from the main trunk. The growth from the jacaranda looks to be coming more from the soil next to the trunk.

Advice on if/how I should remove them? Thanks

Your plants are celebrating the rain, leave new growth on magnolia but trim away the suckers from the Jacaranda as these are taking the strength from the tree, I would add some seasol for an extra boost for them to get them going after such hot dry conditions.
