Garden Edging/Borders

Hi folks,

I have quite extensive gardens around our house. The previous owners or builder used timber (not pine) to separate the lawn from the garden beds. However after 15 years, it is all rotted and needs replacing. Whatever material is used, it needs to be flexible to curve with the gardens but durable.

I am looking for advice on:

- choice of material - wood, aluminium, steel or concrete;

- how deep I should go to stop the lawn from going under it and sneaking into the garden;

- what preparation is needed;

- what tools are required; and

- should I just get somebody to do it, if so any recommendations for the Traralgon area of Gippsland?

Hi Paul,
You really can’t go past corten steel edging for the look, the longevity, it adds a stunning look to your landscape, you can do it yourself or have the professionals in, it depends on the height of the steel you want so you buy the fittings accordingly, fabulous product.

Looks like the palm tree look is working so I would blend that with some succulents maybe agave which can grow large and make great statement plants. Also stick with the stones.

Can you use a piece of metal angle? I did that once for using mini-orb as a splashback and it has a rippled edge.

It’s fab Kate, FormBoss have suppliers throughout Australia, check their website for details, looks fabulous and it adds such a classy look to gardens. Use it in so many ways not only for edging, planters also.

Not sure if Bunnings have something similar, I know they have a wide edging in a corten colour and also black in heavy duty plastic that might look fine, gardens on line sell this metal one also

While I like the steel look I always wonder about heat transfer into the soil as I know this is a problem with colorbond raised beds. In summer the soil bakes the plants. Just fine if you have arid plantings but dire if you have a cottage garden. I have a similar dilemna on the north side of my garden. Would love corten but not if it's going to burn everything in the garden bed.

Hi Austere,

That's something that I hadn't even considered. However, most of my border is intended to below surface.... so as to prevent the Couch or Kikuyu from having a party with the hedges etc but thanks all the same.

I have the metal edging and have not found there to be any issue with heat damage to plants. And I live in a place that has weeks of 40 degrees plus.

Just came across this thread while looking into garden edging ideas myself. I’ve seen a lot of people moving towards Corten steel edging lately because it curves nicely, lasts ages, and doesn’t rot like timber. Metfab in Melbourne has some pretty solid options from what I’ve seen.
