Lighting in a study

My study is the entry to a 1936 Queenlander - was probably initially a verandah with louvres, which has now been closed in. The ceiling is low - I can touch it with ease when standing up. The current light is a strip fluro in the middle of the ceiling which is relatively functional (doesn't hang down), quite bright light (although not great when in Zoom sessions at night). The ceiling is patterned plaster panels. So my question is - is there anything more aesthetically pleasing than a fluro tube, that would not compromise mobility in the room (really can't hang down) and provide adequate light for working?
