Before you brick up try applying some window film to give an obscure view bu5 still let in a little light. Check eBay. They are electrostatic so no glue no harm. Here is pic of my back door. It’s 7.45 so a bit darker than daylight.

That is a great idea. Our reno plans haven't been released to us yes, but I might have an old floor plan somewhere.

Here is our current house plan. The walls between the kitchen and study and main living space are to be removed. The door between the kitchen and garage will be filled in.

Do you ever put the roller blind down on the window?
If you don't, then maybe you need the natural light.
However, it looks as though the window needs some TLC, so might be a chance to put more cabinets along wall when renovating.

So you will also have light from study window. Is the a floor above kitchen, as if not could always add a sky light. But some visibility to carport could be good even through a smaller window say backsplash style that is part obscure

Don't forget that windows are needed for airflow not just light! You need cross breezes for adequate air flow, and the window may be needed for that. frosted louvres could be nice, you can angle them to let in the air, but not look out. everyone has given great suggestions though. you can also create our own view so to speak, maybe hang some nice plans in baskets from under carport?

I would try any of these; frosting the window, plantation shutters, leadlighting the window, replacing with frosted louvres. All of these would be cheaper than removal and bricking up the space, with the added benefit of being reversible and also allowing cross breezes.

I would brick it up, it will never be a good outlook, use that wall for extra cabinets for a galley style kitchen, once you remove the walls between the Study and living you will have heaps of light, It would be best to keep the door from the carport to add to cross ventilation. Otherwise you might need to add an opening skylight

There are some beautiful skylights available now e.g. Velux.

Put a light filtering roller blind in will give privacy but still allowing light and airflow

Hello there, By the looks of the sun across the back garden might I guess north is to the carport side? if so you could be using this window better into living or study for passive solar gain. It gives me conniptions to consider blocking in any window but if it to the north: NOONOONOO... I can see a pantry in the space where the door from c'pt is. but taking the door out will also mean walking all round the house with the groceries. You could replace kitchen along wall in study still with pantry there and door along further.... with view and servery to garden and or back deck area. That way the window is into more study area, not a focus from the kitchen and the kitchen benefits from better outlooks the other way.... win win ...Cheers Margot

If the driveway is on the North side unfortunately it is what it is, unless you can are prepared to move it.

Currently the view out through the kitchen window is looking at a multi story building via a carport and over a car. So if it is North, I would brick up the window and look for a second hand sliding door to add to the study wall on that side to allow for Northern light and ventilation, this could also allow you to block up the door between the carport and house if you really wanted to.

The new door off the old study will benefit from having the Garage set back to the boundary to allow you to develop a lovely courtyard space between it and the house.

That's my suggestion and what I would do, sorry hubbie but it's best to look at the whole scenario before you start. Julie's Laser cut screens would look beautiful used in the new courtyard

Thank you everyone for your tips and ideas. Firstly, it is a bit confusing because the plan says 'study' (former residents used it as a study). Its intended purpose, and what we will use it for is a small dining room/breakfast nook. There is light from the study window, but most of it is obscured by trees.

To pretty up the carport space I have planted some hardenbergias, but they are not doing great when a two-story house blocks the northerly sun.

me me and fianou luca - I don't mind the idea of frosted louvres. It has come up in our discussions. I will have to research if it fits in with the aesthetic of our kitchen and mid-century windows in the lounge room.

Kitchen and Home Sketch Designs - Unfortunately the door to the carport is unusable. It is over a metre drop from the kitchen to the outside ground and there is old plumbing around it. Bricking it up is non-negotiable. I like the idea of putting a window further down into the 'study', but only if we were to set the shed back further. It is food for thought in the future.

Siriuskey - I think we are on the same page. I would love to set the garage back, however, that is way into the future.

Thank you to everyone who suggested skylights. I would LOVE to add them. It might be worth getting a quote, but we need to draw a line in the sand for this renovation. After the kitchen is done, we need to redo our roof. Perhaps a good time for some VELUX!

I am still really torn on what to do. I just blocked up the windows with some towels, and it is quite dark. It is hard to gauge because the walls are still up, thus obscuring light from the lounge and study. Will need to do more pondering.

What's in a name?, It is always better to look at the side of dressed garage than into a garage or carport

Two things if you must remove the door from the carport, by going to a seconds yard to find a sliding door (cheaper) to match your house the bricks that you remove can be used to block up the door and window

This plus a Velux opening skylight will make an enormous difference, if you don't plan on doing the roof soon, I'd still have the Velux window fitted, they are amazing

You would be surprised how inexpensively you could lighten that area just by using paint and plants which would also give you more privacy from the building next door.

most economical extra light can be installed with Solar Skylights (check Illume or Arcol brands available at the major hardware stores) diy installation and no hole in the roof and can be moved if you later decide to install a Velux Skylight in a new roof

A basic idea of what you could do, adding a sliding door off the old study, will allow more natural light and give access from the carport and garage into the house with shopping etc, it would also make a lovely BBQ area. You could use Velux Slylights or glass sloping panels above the kitchen cabinets when you do the new roof, and as OKL suggests temporary use of Solar Sylights which are like having a light turned on in the space

Agree with Julie about shielding the carport view - we have these laser cut screens on one end of our rental apartment to help with shielding ugly traffic views and high rises. They cast the most beautiful patterns.
