try the above paint suggestion and think about adding paneling to the expose bar end and turn under the dark counter. It will be easier to wash off those shoe marks when kids kick, and you won't have clash if you maybe painted paneling same as wall. Test paint with poster board and see if you like it first. Lighting can really make a difference in the perception of colors, and might fix the "clash". Try warm or cold colored bulbs in those pot lights, and see what happens. good luck

Thanks for that AJ Interiors. Yes we have painted chimney breast (white- same as walls) We have a bought a huge dark grey mirror (metal) which has a slightly industrial feel but also in a traditional French style shape (I'm not describing this very well!) the two combinations will hopefully work well in a tradition villa, giving it a modern look. But we really need an injection of colour to lift everything. Am looking for some copper/metallic bedside lights. I don't know how hot it gets in Auckland in summer (I've only ever been to NZ in winter!) but if it gets hot, then go for a pale colour. Dark roofs should be kept for cold places!

We are painting the outside of our place in half truffle by resene - either half or quarter truffle would be lovely inside.
