A caulker has recommended removing grout around all cabinets and caulking instead, to prevent cracks with movement. He has also recommended caulk instead of cabinet scotia for hybrid floors.
My basic understanding is that grout holds things 'hard' , which is why its used with tiles ( to stop them moving ) . Its also a bit more natural or organic .
Caulking is more synthetic , and more flexible , so it is used around cabinets and baths and even windows .
But maybe I'm lazy -- if it already has grout I'd probably leave it , unless it , or the cabinets , are starting to show signs of cracking or similar stressing .
Caulking is used when two planes meet. That’s where movement happens. It can be used for practical reasons in wet area or cosmetic reasons covering gaps in other areas. If the movement would cause a problem ie between tiles and a bath then caulk should be used. If the movement won’t cause a problem then it’s a personal choice. When it comes to flooring there are manufacturers guidelines which should be used as the main source of guidance.
Your caulker is looking for a job lol, kidding, but if the grout is still hanging in there, why touch it. Grout has been used for years by all pros in the field and unless you need to fiddle/fix it because its cracked or ugly. Just leave it alone.
Hi, the Australian building code today now calls for the perimeter of all tiling to be calked so to ensure a waterproof seal that protects cabinetry, and the likes of Door Frames, Architraves and Skirting.
