Thanks all of you! ...and especially for the picture Marie - I've found it very hard to find pictures of rooms with darker walls & ceilings than floors. I've decided, I think, to go with a blonding / transparent white wash for the walls to let the room ease off a little (it's currently all wood) and will let the ceiling and floor keep their oiled colours (they'll get darker with time I think?). The ceiling is going to be a tone or so darker than the floor but I'll see how it goes.. Our furniture is all ash and elm so it shouldn't float too badly. I appreciate all the comments - and the pictures!!

Depending on the color your going with on the exterior, if you keep it red or another darker toned color, I'd go lighter almost honey on the floors; knotty pine? I have always wanted to redo a barn into a modern/rustic home!

Like your space and choice of green. Like the green in the kitchen you referred us to. Looks a little darker or less yellow than one you did with Photoshop? You have the same issue as many of us, for one reason or another we end up trying to blend two disparate styles. The couches say man's room, formal, brown wood to me. Your room, kitchen and fireplace say much lighter in colors , style and spirit! If you try to blend the two you will end up with neither. Your purchases to go with the couches will just add to things pushing you in a direction you don't appear to want to go! I'd suggest you find some sofa covers, or even bed coverlets if you can't get covers to put over the couches. I like the colors in the fireplace. Please tell us more about what styles you like.
