Window Replacement Help- Curb Appeal

I am replacing all the windows in my house. Now is my chance to improve the curb appeal of the house. Any ideas on what to do? I love the traditional colonial style look but I’m not sure if that is the best approach with the room above the garage. Help!

are they replacements or are you changing sizes too?

Get rid of the Bow windows, for sure.

and the hex. Will you be changing out the garage doors?

... while you are at it, I would replace the little portico with an open framed truss look... if you love that colonial style, just look up colonial style and copy it.

Agree that those bow windows must go.

All the windows would look better if they were taller.

Perhaps a colored door if you paint the home grey. Maybe Red? You could simulate a color change on door by hanging something over the door that is the color like a tablecloth or piece of fabric. If you search houzz for" grey homes", you can see what others have done. My home is painted Cape Cod Grey with white trim and it has been very easy to live with for years. I have a dark grey roof.

There are different kinds of ivy and plant privacy screens that can be purchased which might cover your fence and gate and give you the privacy you are looking for. I have not used them before but the photos look very nice. If you picked a color to match your side or front bushes, it would look very nice and becost effective as well. You have a beautiful home. Like your house! I think the verticals in the window on the left are vertical blinds - get rid of these - they are very dating. Paint the horizontal safety bars to match your other window frames. I think the house just lacks privacy - and this then necessitates curtains and blinds at all the windows, giving the house a closed off look. I would get rid of all the very solid and 60s era conifer shrubs and replace with softer planting and one or two taller trees. Perhaps a fence or hedge to provide privacy so those windows could be opened up to the sun and garden. Or you could plant a row of spaced standard trees (fluffy heads on trimmed trunks) (eg robinia, or a weeping standard poplar or willow) you'd only need about 5 along the street frontage, creeper round that letterbox, a few pretty plants next the house. Then open the blinds and curtains. You could add a screened courtyard outside the glazed area on the left. Talk to your local garden shop for ideas. I cant tell whether the walls are brown brick or brown Summerhill stone (thats those rough concrete bricks, also very 60s). My house is Summerhill stone and has been painted cream - looks fine and certainly removes the 60s look. Hope this gives you some ideas - good luck with your new house.

I would remove the garage doors and replace them with large picture windows. You can also have a landscaper pour mulch along the windows and plant some shrubbery over a small portion of the driveway. You can also remove those bay windows and cover the old bay openings with some sort of siding.

Hi, Gab. I agree with Beverly's comment. Ideally you could get taller windows and swap the bay windows for regular flat ones. Grids are also a key feature in colonial style homes, your current windows don't have that. Lots of homeowners are turning away from grids but they can really be beautiful in some homes. I think your home would look really great with windows with grids. The only clashing point is really the garage which also has a grid pattern. Changing the garage doors can be expensive but you could also paint the doors a solid color and that could help minimize any clashing patterns.

On another note, color is a big question for homeowners when it comes to window replacement. It looks like your house currently has a couple of different colors so I just wanted to toss a couple of recommendations out. The first is that white windows would look perfectly fine on your home with the current exterior colors and will be the most cost effective solution. The second is that if you decide to update any of the exterior colors, aside from touching up the white, the best color for your windows should complement the color of your bricks. Since you don't have a dark or black exterior facade, I would recommend going with a color that complements the lighter colors of the brick. If I were to go with a different color though, I would also update other features of the house exterior including the gutters, soffits, portico, and railings.

If you're just replacing the windows right now and can't do anything else, white is a safe choice. If replacing the garage doors isn't in the budget, then at least paint them all the same color. The grid look doesn't add anything. The bow windows also don't add anything, but if you like them from the inside you could keep them. Removing them will involve more than new windows. You don't need the shutters as they aren't sized correctly for the windows, but the siding under them may now be a different color than the rest of the siding because of the aging of the siding, so look underneath before removing all of them.

I agree with kandrewspa regarding the shutters. Double windows are better without them. Even decorative shutters should be sized in proportion to the windows, such as in Beverly’s first pic.

Ah, yes, remove the garage doors and replace them with big windows. Then make sure your garage always looks lovely. Lovely is not how people describe the back end of cars or the sight of lawn mowers and snow blowers.

What about removing the 2 bay windows and covering them up with siding or shutters?

Remove the 2 garage doors and put in bay windows. You can also paint your front door black. The sky is the limit and the possibilities are endless with no barriers.

You can go a long way with new windows, larger than the current ones if possible . If not and really even if you go larger add larger shutters. Personally if it's in the budget paint. Painting goes a very long way in changing a home appearance. Your home is lovely.
