home office with lots of natural light

I have a bedroom which I use as home office. Currently it has a desk but I want to add a second desk for my personal use. I imagine an L shaped layout. The other desk will have same setup as my work one which you see in the photo. What’s the best way I can decorate and take full advantage of the natural light in room. Also any ideas of window covers, right now it has ikea sticker paper blinds, I can’t make a lot of changes in the room since it’s a rental property . I also have an antique dresser which I am thinking to paint- the one with the computer monitors, those are the monitors I will put on my desk

Which desk do you use more during the day? Were it me, I'd put the one I use most during the day right at the big window, looking out. I'd put a curtain rod between the main window block and the arch window above it and hang drapes. Don't push the desk so close to the windows you can't easily open and close the curtains. I'd hang the same or very complimentary curtains on the other window to the left.

For the desk I didn't use so much during the day I think I'd still like to be able see out the windows, so I'd either put the 2d desk at the other window (make it an L-shaped) or against the back wall (the entry wall, with my chair with it's back to the wall. If I chose the back wall for the 2d desk, I'd put a reading chair in the left small window corner with a floor lamp.

I'd get several floor lamps for good lighting. Amazon sells inexpensive goose neck floor lamps that can really be useful and look fun if you've got several in a room. The come in several colors.

I'd also put a sofa in the room on the wall opposite wherever the painted dresser lands. I'd invest in portable tables with handles to make it easy to move from one part of the room to another with coffee, cell phone, reading materials, etc. My favorite is the Burvik from IKEA. It comes in several finishes.

Are you allowed to paint? We rented a housein Belize that had bright white walls with blood red trim. We painted the trim bright, clean, fresh white then painted each room. The living room was a soft beige (the color of sand), the kitchen a soft yellowish-gold (the color of morning sunshine), our bedroom was the soft blue of the morning sky, the office/2nd bedroom was watery green (like the ocean) and the bathroom was midnight blue (like th enight sky). It had old harvest gold fixtures, so this color detracted your eyes from them. You can do basically the same thing. Use the colors that are in the tile, but use different shades of them. Go lighter or darker depending on th eroom and the amount of natural light it receives. I wish you all the best!

Thank you everyone for your comments. We live outside Christchurch, and the house was badly damaged in the quakes here. The post-quake rebuild process could safely be described as slightly chaotic, and the house company I am using are located some distance away (like on the North Island), which is why discussion with the architect has been - em - less than optimal. The architect threw something at me to get me out of my comfort zone I think and this is what's freaking me out! I think the windows on the east side are to come (no reason for them not being there), and probably a skylight in the kitchen roof. The section of land is narrow and steep, (this is a historic port town and with access from the south (where the view is); there is no parking other than on the street (south). Patricia - the laundry doesn't sit right with me either! Looks a bit like it's been glued on the side of the hosue. And it is too small as it is to store coats, shoes etc. This is the access to the back garden - thus the door (also means muddy boots can be dumped when we come in!). Entering a house through a living room is very common over here, especially where space is at a premium (small section, small house footprint).

Hello Lisa..thanks for your comments - so kind of you. The pictures are not good (sorry) and to be honest whilst I'm renovating I don't have the courage the post much at all ..well at least until it's finished but here are a few enclosed. My real idea is to get a discussion going that we might all enjoy. and yes how light strikes (as in angle?) can impact on even the paint colour etc. I see so many questions from readers about wallpaper paint colour etc and yet experts and skilled people such as yourself will know that it's the cohesion that has to work and light can play such a huge part. A wallpaper can be purchased and then prove disappointing if used in different a light as can paint - which is why we use your good services where possible! I've a pile of boards each with different colours (I use linen style artists boards as I can shift them around - I leave a white border on them to allow a suitable contrast) The small bedroom picture with the striped curtains was more to show that curtain colour - it's now blended with duck egg blue paint (sorry it's a New Zealand company called Resene's so it won't be known of there but called Robin's Egg Blue), ivory carpets which I had edged in a green/blue wool. Before these drapes (Laura Ashley) were in a different room and just didn't work. The bedroom hasn't been finished (See? I'm still a tad embarrassed) but I mentioned these as with incandescent lights this curtain colour did not work at all. Taking my courage in both hands and uploading a picture of the main living area which is to be painted next to do away with the strong saturated green..very dark and gloomy as the natural light is very limited. Hoping you can't see the paint splotches on the wall. Another lesson I learned is to paint a surface white and THEN paint the choices. If we don't do this the original surface colour 'bleeds'. So I really hope to have others including myself recognise that we have to have one eye to the climate and outdoor colours all the time as well as the same paint colour possibly being different from room to room. A nice whitewash wall/paint treatment would brighten it up if done in a light color. Or I would paint it but not sure if all the knots will bleed through? If so then I would use an oil base Kilz to stop bleed through and paint it depending on the interior design I want for each room. I would not paint the ceiling for a more Montana look,

We have this in our shared office I have a single large desk on one wall and my hubby is legally blind so needs some extra things on his desk so he has a L shaped desk with all his stuff 4 monitors a printer etc . It works for us and the light from a 2 windows is great during the day and we have LED pots 4000K for nightime , I face a wall not a big deal but can still see out the window to my right. I think your space is quite large so why angled at all I garee the work desk where you can see out all day and the more nightime desk can go anywhere with a good lamp

If you're going to do an L shape desk set-up, we might suggest doing it where the window is. You could place one desk in the window and the other on the blank wall to the right. You'd have a lot of extra open space to potentially put books up, have two chairs to sit and read in, or a chaise lounge chair. Below are a few of the home offices we have designed. Maybe try an L-shaped desk in the big window area. Then you could easily add other things to the room. Maybe a nice reading nook area? It would really depend on what you are needing in the space though. Maybe a fold out sofa?
