Design solution needed!

Hi, I'm chasing a design solution! We need to effect repairs (like for like, not a renovation) to the front garage section of our house as a result of a car impacting the centre brick pillar.

It's a large single car garage on the right. A storage shed on the left (behind the stack stone skin wall). A non supporting plastered wall runs the length of the garage, separating the 2 spaces.

The centre brick pillar (non supporting) needs to be rebuilt, along with the skin wall. The cladding needs to be replaced. I'll probably use the same dated stack stone as it fits the style of the house (90's build).

The major issue is that we are unable to source matching bricks for the brick

pillar. We are reusing what we can, however about half the bricks have been broken/damaged.

I'm concerned that without matching bricks, the repaired pillar will stand out as just that - a repair and effect the street appeal of the house. While the house is a little dated currently, at least it is cohesive.

Any budding designers got any clues?! Extend the cladding/stackstone around the pillar? I'd love something more modern than stackstone, but I just don't think it matches the house. Vertical timber slat cladding? I haven't got a clue!

I would not replace the stone work with the same product. As you have said, it is dated. In my opinion it is not adding any cohesiveness to the house facade. I would use composite timber cladding. Installing the cladding from left corner to the new built support on the right. You then will not need to source bricks to match existing bricks, you just need to install a wall completely across that storage space, not necessarily brick, could be a stud wall. Then install cladding over the new wall.

Hi Jacky, What a great start to your room! Mustard is a really versatile colour and you can do so much with it. To help with what else to use there are a few other things to take into account. What sort of flooring do you have? How much light comes in? How big is the room? What sort of bedding configuration will there be? What will the bedroom be used for - a guest room or for family? Apart from rustic, how you want it to feel - relaxed and calming or fun and edgy for example. Are there any other colours that you have used a lot in the rest of the house? Thinking about all those things can get you heading in the right direction for a whole room look and colour scheme that you will love.

I think the L shape works for the shape of the room. I am not going to consider the appliances etc, personally I do not like a sink in the middle of the Island Bench so I think you have made the right choice there. The only thing that sticks out to me immediately is that your Island looks too small I think you should extend that out to make the end flush with the length of your cabinets on the garage wall side. It looks like you could probably add another meter onto that end, which will add more seating, more storage and to me would appear more balanced.

we have, not sure that it would work though. We have the internal plaster wall (frame pictured) dividing the storage/shed space from the garage. Ideally, I'd like to keep the 2 spaces separate and not remove that internal wall

The original build was a double garage. The last reno widened one garage/car space and turned the 2nd space into a shed. Not everyone's cup of tea I know but the extra storage works for us, rather than the extra car space.

no need to remove the internal wall although it may need to be slightly adjusted to allow space for the roller door but keep the storage space with a simple wide garage door at the front

A double garage door?? When the door is up to get your car in, this will then expose the storage area. If installing a wall as it was, seems a waste of good money to add a double garage door. Do you need external access to storage from front of house? If so, add a single roller door to suit the storage space, then they can be raised individually.

If the double garage door is sectional so that each opening can be raised individually, that could work and give the impression of a double door. Could look great but I am sure Jane has some great ideas now to make her decision .

Have you contacted demolition companies -- I'm in NZ , but those look a pretty standard brick here -- if you need 30 or 40 I suspect someone would have them ? Maybe an avenue to chase up .

Another thought would be similar bricks ( size , texture , etc ) but a different tone , and then paint the whole 'garage front' ( all the bricks on that wall , across to where it dips in ) in a complementary colour ( maybe a beige ) , or riskier would be a white ? Even riskier would be doing the pillars across the veranda the same -- white around the garage , and the pillars , would tie the whole lot together , so would a charcoal -- charcoal is more on trend , but riskier .

Vertical battens as suggested I love -- stained timber with a darker background would look great , and fill what was the stacked stone . Maybe even a larger window if you need more light , with battens below ? Another thought would be to do a 60cm wide strip of batten further over , maybe between the largest window and that smaller , higher one ? It then ties the whole front together too ?

Just thoughts , but I'd be reluctant to just do one part -- take this as an opportunity to add a few design tweaks across the whole house . I doubt it would be too expensive either ( depending what you can do yourself ) -- maybe $4000 in materials instead of $2000 , but it would look better if done reasonably cleverly .
