Fireplace Re-style

This fireplace is all out of proportion with the size of the wall/room. The angled and non-symmetrical eft hand side is particularly annoying. I want to install a woodfire box with glass door into the fire cavity to make the fireplace more functional and also want to improve the aesthetics. The room has older style deep cornices. Looking for suggestions and also wondering if anyone knows whether this stone product is likely to contain asbestos. Is there a easy/safe way to test for asbestos?

Is fire place built entirely or clad with real stone? What do you mean by a wood fire box with a glass door? Can you take a photo of the fireplace and the entire room and cornices, for context, and more info for suggestions.

Is this what you mean by wood fire box with glass door? If you want this aesthetic and installation, then you would have to ensure that there is enough cavity room for the new fire components. Plus access for the flue. If the current fireplace surround is real stone, it would be a shame to remove, as it is probably original to the home.

You can put the TV over the fireplace, not the best situation but the way the room lays out it is the only logical place to put it. If you could you should add one additional layer on your mantel that could extend it out another 4" to deflect the radiant coming from the fireplace. I would also mount it on a slimline mounting bracket and have the bottom of the TV no further than 4" above the mantle. Ideally you want the TV to be in as straight a line as possible with your eyes. You don't want to look up too high at the TV, it's like being at a sports bar. Also if you can snake up the power and the HDMI from the cable there is a box they make that has both in one so it makes for a very clean installation.

A few simple steps can give your room a lot more vibe! Try pairing the drapes with sheer curtains, that will give the window more depth. The tv wall could be your accent wall, a dark blue would actually work very well. If the TV has backing, I would hang it on the wall, a few inches above the furniture piece. The two frames above the white dresser should go below the wall clock. Instead, a large art piece (about the length of the dresser) would complement that wall much better. I would also replace the coffee table with a rectangular, heavier glass and metal table, placed in the center. Also pillows. Pick up colors from your art work and the accent wall and use those to find pillows to decorate your sofas. Hope this inspires :-)

We asked a similar question when we bought our piece of bare land. We were advised that building a simple shape would reduce costs... so we've built a t shape. Single story is almost always cheaper. We have a builder who is happy to let us do a lot of work with him. We also choose to live on site, which saves us a lot in fuel. The kids and I clean up the building site most days. We've been able to separate the rubbish out between actual rubbish and recyclable material. As for cladding, we were going to do a mix of corrugated iron with plywood board and batten. But given some of the additional hassles, I don't think there's much in it cost wise. However, in saying all that, we chose to invest in long term benefits, so our house is exactly what we want and should be cheap to run. We were hoping to build for $1800 /sq m but we're still coming out at about the $2000 mark.

Yes that type of woodfire, but one which inserts into existing cavity rather than freestanding. More like this picture but not such a modern surround as the house is late 60's in style. I'm not sure if the stone blocks are solid or a just a facade. I'm reluctant to start chipping it away if there is a possibility it contains asbestos. I'll take some pictures of the room for context in daylight.

Re the asbestos concerns. Get a licensed asbestos inspector to inspect and advise you.

Let me know what you discover. I have a similar fireplace and thought it was natural stone with a brick firebox not asbestos.

You can buy asbestos test kits where you send off some fibres to be tested. Make sure you use an Australian lab. If it’s real stone it’s not asbestos but the lining or lining bricks maybe. It’s only a problem if you disturb it. If you’re seeking an insert box make sure you get the specifications for measurements, clearances and outlets of the one you want before doing any demolition or alteration work.
